Marble fireplace mantel and Plaster cornice. How to match?

Dear Sirs,

Have you tried to choose a marble mantel and plaster cornices for walls and ceilings? I guess they have to match in some way. The problem is I do not know how exactly because there are no books or forums dedicated to this issue. You can ask here on styleforum how to match a suit with a tie (and get lots of competent answers) yet there is no forum where you can ask how to match a mantel with a cornice. It is a too narrow topic.

I like the old Parisian flats style where they have marvelous marble mantels and ornate cornices. However, there are so many patterns of plaster cornices that it is hard to choose the one that would be a perfect match. Some of them are pretty intricate and ornate, some of them are pretty strict.

If the marble mantel has ornate decoration, a lot of curves, does it mean the cornice should also be intensely decorated with similar curves? Or maybe quite the opposite the cornice should be strict to contrast it?

I guess there must be some books or articles devoted to this topic yet I managed to find none.

Could you provide a little help on this issue, please? Do we have any architects or designers here who are into Parisian flat style?
