It could be both. But it seems that there is very little padding on the shoulders which means that you can wear it as a sports coat with, for example, light blue, beige, grey, burgundy chinos or slacks.

Americans are more hung up on the horrors of an orphan suit jacket than Europeans. Men here in Italy would happily wear that with separate trousers.

I appreciate all who chimed in on this question. I decided to buy it so can't wait til it comes in. I have found that the quest for find expensive pieces for little money is SO ADDICTING. I can't stop.:)

The general advice is jackets with flap pockets are part of a suit. Jackets with patch pockets (pockets stitched on the outside of the jacket), are generally casual sports jackets. That is generally the rule I've followed however you should always wear whatever makes YOU happy, is comfortable, fits well and looks good. Forget about the so-called "rules".

I have a couple of sports jackets with flap pockets (both Eleventy Milano), who seem happy enough to tailor sport jackets with flaps and I'm happy enough to buy them and wear them.
