finished a bottle of Green Irish Tweed, looking into getting some Selection Verte. Problem is I'd be buying it, w/o smelling it first. Oh well.....

I'd definitely smell it first, unless you are getting a GREAT deal on it. Selection Verte is an okay one, but it definitely is different from GIT. I think it has a more "dated" feel to it, coming out in 1970. You may want to try the ORIGINAL YSL Pour Homme first (the one from the 1970's) as I think they have a similar vibe of crisp, green, spiciness with mint. And, the YSL is usually found online for $20 or so. Creed is usually so expensive it isn't a good idea to do a blind buy. It would be a shame to spend $100+ for a fragrance that you may not like! If you want a recommendation for a Creed blind buy, I'd say either Green Valley, Silver Mountain Water or Himalaya. They both are quite nice in any setting.

Keeping in the Creed vibe, if you like this Lacoste, sometime give the above mentioned Creed Green Valley a smell. I think you'd really like it (I have both and find them to be similar, although the Creed is miles above the other).

They are, usually because they come in those giant 8oz bottles! But, scentiments often has some that are considerably cheaper than retail. Bois du Santal is probably my favorite Private Collection, followed closely by Aubepine Acacia. The first is sandalwood and something a little stinky (in a good way), the second is an almost metallic sort of citrus. I also used to have Cypres Musc, but swapped it on basenotes; like the name suggests, it was a dank, dark, musky cypress scent that I just couldn't get into.

A bottle of Varvatos Vintage, my only bottle actually. I've also got a bottle of cheap stuff that smells like A*men without the chocolate notes that I quite like. Thinking about Bulgari Aqua as a cheap summer scent that's NOT aqua di gio...I'm also a Bulgari Black fan but that seems like a fall/winter scent to me.

My everyday cologne is Eau d'Issey pour Homme. I sometimes use Aqua di Parma Assoluta but my wife prefers Eau d'Issey

I might be mistaken, but did you mention before your wife is Japanese? If so, I've found that often ALL of my Japanese friends and such always prefer lighter, more "aquatic" type scents (of the Miyake, Creed Erolfa, Ultramarine, Bulgari Aqua, D&G Light Blue variety). Unfortunately, I tend to like somewhat heavier, "stinky" scents and they tend to sink like a lead balloon (in fact, they always said that they smell like the interior of a temple ((which makes sense, given the patchouli, sandalwood, amber bases of many). So, when I go back in the summers, I'm always careful to pack my lighter, more user-friendly scents. I leave my vintage Guerlains, Chanels, and old-school Creeds with the infamous fecal-note at home.

As well, I remember talking to a clerk at a fragrance store in Tokyo and she mentioned that often the heavier, more vintage "euro" scents even from famous houses tended not to do well, and that often they would release Japan only (or Asia only) versions that were lighter. For example, IIRC, Tom Ford's original Gucci PH didn't go over well, neither did a lot of the YSl scents (body Kouros, opium, etc.)

You remember well, she's Japanese indeed. For herself, she clearly prefers citrussy and light scents. I started using Eau d'Issey many years before we met though and I still prefer it to AdP or other colognes that just sit in my cabinet.

^Yes, that's the same with nearly all of my Japanese friends, both girls and guys. Whenever I wear a patchouli or sandalwood heavy scent, inevitably two or three people frown and say, "yuck... you smell like a temple." Hermes Belami was the worst... I absolutely love that scent but I couldn't get anybody to stand near me all day.

You ought to give Millesime Imperial a try (if you haven't already); it's sort of the light, lovely, citrus-y scent par excellence. Neroli Sauvage as well. Something a little more affordable, but equally nice, is Eau de Lalique. That one is my all-purpose, fall back summer scent if I can't think of something else to wear or am unsure of the type of occasion and don't want to overdo it.

L'Occitane's Green Tea with Mint works perfectly for me for daily use. The scent is just nice and clean. Definitely understated. It's not overpowering but stays with me all day long.

^I think the two you mentioned are both very reputable and have good prices. Ebay is a crapshoot and there are actually some people selling fake Creeds there. BUT, basenotes is very reliable, as is scentiments.

The good ole' days of Creed purchasing, with $45 authentic testers from the Bond no. 9 store, are sadly over, but there are still LOTS of those bottles floating around at basenotes. I probably purchased 25 or more and swapped a lot of them to other basenoters over the years. So, head over there and start sniffin'

I've been looking for a new scent along those lines but haven't really found one that I liked. I've worn L'eau par Kenzo, D&G Light blue, Bulgari Aqua, and a few others in the past. Any recommendations?

Also I was wondering what your opinions on the Bond no.9 series was rach2jlc. When I was shopping at Saks the guy gave me all the samples but for some reason or another half of them smell too similar to each other. Is there a light citrus scent that I've overlooked in their line? I'll be looking at picking up a bottle of Creed Erolfa depending on how it goes this weekend.

As I mentioned in one of my earlier posts, give Eau de Lalique a try. I really like it and find it subtle, fresh, and light without being boring. It's also very reasonably priced when bought online (either from ebay or scentiments). Something a little unexpected might be Prada Infusion d'iris. It's also light, but with a lot of depth.

As for Bond, they are hit and miss. Some of them are REALLY nice, some are ho-hum (I've had maybe 10 or 12 of the line). Unfortunately, they are very expensive, so the last thing you want is something ho-hum.

My favorites are Riverside Drive (crisp, clean, with a hint of peppery spiciness and a lot of class), West Broadway (sweet, crisp, something like a much classier Mugler Angel), and Fire Island (light and fresh with a distinct suntan lotion-y note).

Little Italy is okay, but a little too bitter on the citrus. New Haarlem is neat, but a little more gourmand than you might like (it has a very "foodlike" element to it). HOT Always is very warm with lots of patchouli and cinammon (almost like Red hots candy), and Nuits de Noho is very rich and warm as well. So, these I wouldn't recommend as much. East Hamptons, too, is very light and fresh, but BORING!! Much too boring for the retail price. Great Jones didn't do much for me, either; it felt like expensive 1980's Quorum.
