Usually, we talk about the best quality or fit. But who are the big dogs on in the goodyear welt game in terms of revenue, numbers of lasts, and overall brand presence?
Pulling estimates of revenue, this is what I could find. I am sure I am missing some but tried to capture the more well known ones.
Cole Hahn: $600M-$700M
J&M: $270M-$300M
AE: 160-170M
C&J: 40-60M
Carmina: 20-30M
Loake: 20-30M
Churchs: 20-3M
Alden: 16-30M
Beckett Simson: $10M-$20M
EG: 10-20M
G&G: 5-10M
Meermin: 5-10M
JL: 5M

EG: 114k

J&M: 86k
Alden: 63k
Loake: 49k
I didn't pull lasts but I imagine it is somewhat similar with the order of this list.
If you take Cole Hahn and J&M out for being low quality, is it fair to say that Allen Edmonds & Crockett & Jones are the big dogs in goodyear welted shoes? I know things are diversifying but it seems that they are two most well known goodyear welted shoe brands. After that, there is a lot of brands in the next tier (Carmina, Loake, Alden, Churchs). I know someone is going to say that the best brands are lower in revenue because of their higher prices / out of reach. I'm not equating size with quality. I'm just looking at the list of big shoe brands differently than we normally do. One can rebute me by looking at instagram following where some of the top-tier brands hit way above their weight implying their influence is stronger than one may think. Perhaps brands like AE have less of an enthusiast following and more is coasting on their retail size.
