I don't get jodhpurs myself. They look costumey, like they ought to be worn with a pith helmet. And it seems like your trou would always be getting caught on the harnessing. Not my cuppa. Not a big fan of shoe ornamentation in general, though, oddly, I love a clunky full brogue.

I would think a Chelsea would seem at least as masculine to the average viewer as the monks that get such love on SF.

Which is to say not masculine at all. For some reason I see double monks as way more effeminate than single monks.

If I were to start fretting about this sort of thing, I'd need to cull my sweater collection before taking on my footwear. Got some furry argyle Grover sweaters from the '60s you'd never see in the men's department today. And I have to confess to a fondness for a few of the elaborate "holiday" designs Ralph has put out. I have one that looks great on me but would look equally appropriate on my auntie.

This is my feeling on jodhpurs as well. Which is not to say they can't be interesting. Although, one of the things about unlaced boots is that it's going to be difficult to tell the differences between styles without being shown. As noted the gusset on Chelsea remains hidden. Most of the examples of Jodhpur that I've seen would not have the strap visible in most circumstances.

For boots though, I remain a fan of western.

I get tired of bluchers because of their ubiquity. Most lace up boot or "dress" shoe type things I encounter in the wild are bluchers (which I'm assuming you mean to be synonymous with derby or an open lacing).

Not a fan of Chelsea boots. They look effeminate to me. While we are at it, might as well put jodhpurs in that category.

It happens occasionally when I go up and down stairs, but that's it. I know Unipair Guy always cuts the pullup strap off all his boots for this reason.

Has anybody stumbled across some nice looking Chelsea's that weren't wholecut?

Yes, when an outfit calls for a boot I wear a real boot and when it calls for a dress shoe I wear a real dress shoe. Chelsea boots strike me as neither. If I bought a pair I would never wear them. Those RM Williams boots don't look overly feminine but some of the sleeker numbers do.

These are neither chelsea boots nor jodhpurs, but something in between. Bespoke paddock boots ordered on a post-wedding trip in Saville (making them a few more than 15 years old). It is not really visible, but under the bridle-type leather there is a full elastic gore, which has not shown any sign of aging. Except to get the buckles and strap out of the way, there is no real reason to close them up - the elastic does all the work. Obviously, these are not dress boots, both because of the last and the rough-out leather.

Axe, I have resisted. But mostly because Im out of funds, and regardless of my feeling on chelseas, there are other things that would come first.
