I usually just buy Seattle's Best from Target. It's about $5.99 a pound. Fits the bill.

I just found out that a local Whole Foods has started offering roasted coffee on the premises. They'll take whatever you want and spot roast it for you while you shop. Anybody tried their coffee before?

Intelligentsia is great when you're in Chicago.
Out here, nothing is as good as a cup of Blue Bottle, or especially a Blue Bottle Cafe au Lait.

Intelligentsia is more commercially oriented in terms of selling roasted beans to consumers. I really like them, but since I live on the East Coast and they're in Chicago, I find them that their shipping takes too long (I don't want to lose the days of freshness to UPS). I order the majority of my coffee from Counter Culture Coffee which is a great operation (www.counterculturecoffee.com/). If I lived on the West Coast, I'd probably go with Blue Bottle or one of the West Coast operations. That said, I order ever so often from Sweet Maria's, even though they're in Oakland. I find their coffee pairings to fun experiments. This last one where they took the same bean and roasted it for different lengths of time wasn't uninteresting.

I have been drinking this Daterra Farm Special Reserve from Terroir lately:

It is unlike any other coffee I've tasted, but I don't necessarily mean that in a good way. It is fun but not the kind of thing I would buy routinely. Terroir has a good selection, though, and they ship.

Barismo is also good (and ships):

Anyway they are both local and ubiquitous in Boston's heavy gourmet spots.

Thomas, does the original Specs Liquor Store downtown still roast their own coffee? I remember in the early 90's when I'd walk in there and the place sometimes reeked of roasting coffee.

I think I saw the roaster on premises the last time I went but the coffee smell was not especially strong. This was - I think - a month or so ago.

Here in Pittsburgh we have nicholascoffee.com. They have good variety and the prices are fair. They also have a nice selection of teas. I don't even go downtown any more, I just go online and in a couple of days the order is here.

Blue Bottle and Ritual are the fous fous of roasting here in the bay but I am a "hard" coffee drinker and Catahoula has got them beat! Seriously, Catahoula is great. Before I went with McGlaughlin coffee another small outfit. They give the roasting a personal touch you can taste.
