I roast my own.

When I (occasionally) do buy, it's from Blue Bottle in SF; also looking to try Four Barrel.

Supposedly the best coffee comes from this little critter called theLuwak. Its an animal from Indonesia that resembles a cat. It eats the berries off a coffee tree and then quite literally sh1ts them out undigested. Villages then collect the sh!t/berries and then only lightly roast them so you do not lose the complex flavour of a coffee berry that has gone through the insides of this animal. Supposedly a superior taste to anything else you may have drunk.

If you can't get the Civet-cat-**** beans (and Holy-Mother-of-God, the real **** is more expensive than full-up Kona!) - Just stick with Peets.

Peet's roasts the beans the day before they ship them to you and it's a LOT fresher than the 2 month old beans you'll get from Starbuck's (and I have SHARES in Starbuck's, but hey -I'm your buddy)...Peet's is like a year fresher than the $17 for 17 pounds-o-coffee you'll get at Costco.

Fresher DOES make a difference. And if you can't tell the difference, buy ******* Folgers

These are my two favorites.... http://www.terroircoffee.com/ http://www.ptscoffee.com/ The Kenyan coffees from Terrior Coffee are absolutely amazing! Most of the other places people are recommending in this thread don't even sell anything as good! However their prices are very steep-- e.g. $25 for 12 oz. But I drink about 10 cups a day so price does matter somewhat. I have found that the best beans from PT's coffee are nearly as good as the best from Terrior and cost about 1/2 the price. So I've been buying mostly from PT's lately. And Folgers, is that even coffee?! I thought this Folgers review from coffeereview.com summed it up best.....
Dominated by sweet grainy nut tones overlaid with a sour, musty ferment. I can think of no analogy for this odd combination of sensations because human beings normally don't consume products that are both fermented and mildewed-tasting.

www.novocoffee.com Stumptown and gimme are great sources. No online or mail order available but I buy a bag of Heartbreaker at Cafe Grumpy in NYC whenever I can. It is roasted at novo in Denver. Just looked at Grumpy's website and they have added online sales. www.cafegrumpy.com

I will have to check PTs out, as I do enjoy Terroir. I grew up just oustide of Boston and remember the good ole George Howell days of The Coffee Connection before it was bought out by Starbucks.

As to what I normally buy - I usually buy the Costa Rican beans from Trader Joe's for daily coffee that goes with me to work. On the weekends I usually have some beans from Stumptown or Barrington Coffee to use in french press.
