dammit, this was the first thought for myself as well. Preferably a place where the weather allows for linen pants all year long (its like not wearing pants at all). Not sure what I would do exactly, but I'd like to invest in businesses which may not reap great returns, but will be enjoyable to run, like a resort, well staffed and managed on an island.

I think everyone is being humorous or rather generic. There's obvious much more that I'd do with $50M. Honestly, a minimum of $30M would go into investing. But I do agree with you to an extent. $60k a year really wouldn't be enough to sustain my dream. If I can ramp that up to about $100K without having to go into the office, then it could happen. I'm keeping my day job for the time being (although wouldn't really care if I was laid off tomorrow), while working on investments on the side with the intent on transferring over to that as my knowledge and bankroll increases.

Why pay when someone else will? Remember the downside of working your way up in film is that there is no money in it until you are big. It's not so bad if you are filthy rich on the side.
Why would I have someone else pay for it, and profit from MY movie? If I had 50 million, I would make MY movie.

I'd open a lunch counter style restaurant in a small building on a farm out where people refer to their surroundings by the county, not cities or streets. I'd serve 3 maybe 4 things :

hamburgers/cheeseburgers
freshcut french fries
coca-cola which we'd mix at the counter ala Jacobs Pharmacy.
home made fruit pies and ice-cream

to avoid the hassle of dealing with distributors, employ as many as possible, and ensure quality by being involved EVERY step of the way...

I would [i say I, but mean we as i'd have to employ several folks to keep things running smoothly] raise my own beef: grass fed cows, that were born, raised, and butchered on my property. I'd serve seasonal vegetables and and potatoes grown organically on the property. If possible i'd grow my own wheat which i'd mill myself for use in the hamburger buns and fruit pies which would be baked daily fresh onsite. We'd make our own condiments. We'd have fresh eggs and fresh milk too. all this to be self sufficient, and done onsight to maintain the whole local.organic integrity etc.

also,as a ministry we'd serve sabbath lunch FREE to anyone who showed up at our restaurant between 1-2pm on Saturday.

I'd look to do this as a source of industry for a struggling christian boarding school similar to the one I attended if possible. So the kids could afford quality education, as well as earn a decent 'take home' wage for entertainment/clothes etc.

I'd have atleast 2 { galaxie 500, bronco} cars for myself as well as a nice car for the wife [?] and a car to take to church {60's continental}.

I'd have a wardrobe full of mJkrell shirting, LVC 47'S, and chucks.

i'd only wear brand new socks

cold coke in glass at my disposal always

-my wife would get a ring with a diamond on it, lasik, a new car, a new house, atleast a month off work to roam around Europe with me
-my grandfather would get a bottle of Johnny Walker as often as he needed
-my dad would never have to mow the lawn again
-I'd hire a lawyer to expedite the expatriot procedures for a friend and his wife to move to Prague.
-my friend Ed would get any camera he wanted
-my friend Gavin would get ticktes to or a private concert from Tom Waits
-my friend shane would get a plane in need of repair, and the chance to stop working long enough to fix it up himself
-my mom would get private art lessons
and a sleugh of other things for other individuals and institutions that have been good to me

Buy a car with European Delivery. Thinking the Mercedes SL class....perhaps an AMG if they do them. Love the drop tops....Then....Drive around europe....basically a culinary, shopping and driving tour. I wouldn't bring anything really so I'll be forced to buy new clothes, shoes, cologne, and everything else. Whatever gets too bulky I'll just ship home. Take a lot of photos with a kickass camera (Leica compact maybe). Me being a douchebag posing in front of my new drop top in front of Europe's great cities.

Live in nice, modern boutique hotels and just experience it all.

Then go back to America, buy reasonable condos in NY and Hawaii, keep my LA place. Perhaps a home in Vegas (tax haven + its big...i wouldn't be there too much, just have a "pimped out crib" with pool, etc that doesn't cost very much).

Then follow the Portland Trailblazers for 82 games + Playoffs all the way, sitting courtside at every game around the country. Blog about it and get profiled on TV about my journeys!

buy the nicest bike and camera i could find. set up a bank account/credit card to manage my funds. smash my phone, give my mum 20mil and tell her to spread the love to the family. put my bag on with 3 days worth of clothes, ride somewhere, stop when i want, pay someone to let me sleep where ever i was, eventually catch a plane and buy another bike in some country, take shitloads of pictures, make shitloads of friends, have a fuckload of stories to tell when i eventually stumble home with my tom hanks castaway style beard.

do it all under the name inigo montoya.

In all seriousness, I don't believe my life would change a whole lot. Obviously I'd buy a lot of the luxuries I've always wanted but never splurged on - bespoke clothes, watches, stereo stuff, cars, bigger house outfitted just how I'd like it. I'd make sure my family was well-taken-care-of, e.g. maybe let the S.O. stay home with the baby (she hates her job) or hire a full-time nanny, college funds, etc...

...but I don't think I'd quit my job. My job is about more than earning a paycheck, and there are a lot of things keeping me invested here that I care about. I might show up a bit less, and I'd take time to do things I want to do, e.g. travel, take some culinary classes, maybe open a bar/restaurant as a money-losing but fun hobby, but I'd really want to keep doing what I'm doing for the most part.

I think I really fear that having stuff I haven't earned, or living a life of luxury without any sense of ownership or purpose, would bore me and depress me.

I think I'd be happy to have the comfort of knowing I had the cash if I needed it, but I'd try to at least keep some touchstone on reality. I'd try only to dip into the first $5-10 million as the initial splurge, and try to conserve the rest.

Do all women hate their job? I have a friend who says his wife comes home every night and complains for about 15 to 20 minutes. Women have to vent I know, but it seems they take a lot of stuff that happens at work too personally.

I think a lot of women do need to vent, but my S.O.'s job really is a *************. I'd kill myself if I had to work that job, but they pay her more than I think we're totally confident she could easily get elsewhere. Also, just having had a baby, and in this economy, and given that she's at a very stable company, it's not worth the risk of changing things up at this time.

She loved her old job, but it was here at my company, (making less dough) and once we started seeing each other, something had to give.

I've seen that New Yorker cartoon.

Thought a bit more. I might stock up on bullion and antibiotics and set up a permanent house in New Zealand. Set it up for off-the-grid power and such. [/Manton]
