The solution to it all is not listen to music at low levels. Or, get a good pair of headphones.

For me, the problem is usually not the amp, its the speakers. You need some meaty drivers that create sound pressure at low volumes. The finest quality of my KEF 107's is the amazing sound quality at the very lowest of background volumes.

Tube amps can create an issue at low levels though. You need to drive them a bit to make them sing.

I dont recall any recent tube amps with loudness buttons :)

Solid state does a better job at low power, but tube amps are heavy on current, they can drive stubborn drivers pretty well.

Not true. Modern tube amps sound great at all levels of gain.

Currently running a Classe stack with a pair of Sonus Faber Concerto speakers. Would try and take pics if anyone is interesting. Great jazz set up, very warm and forgiving as well if I want to run a digital input.

Nothing fancy-dancy.

Bedroom
Denon AVR-1601 (which is connected via. toslink to my mac)
4x Wharfedale Diamond 8.1
Ultrasone PRO 2900 (for some more intimate time with my music)

When I find the money, I will for sure get some Classé Audio equipment and a nice set of speakers.

:lookaround:

In minor disagreement with that statement.

Would rewrite to read 'W makes ok speakers compared to consumer garboage'

I know nothing about stereos but want to play some actual records in my apartment rather than just ipod stuff (so nothing loud but want something that sounds and looks ok). Anyone willing to throw out some advice? I'd really like a to get a braun sk5 but seems like those are tough to find in the us?

So could someone recommend a decent small set up that wouldn't require too much brain damage? Or maybe I'll throw a straw man out and tell me why it doesn't work and what I'm missing (I literally might not even have the right components listed)?

turntable (maybe that technics sl 1500 that someone's selling on here or something)
