Returning from Vegas. The guy on the left is an amazing Texas character and dear friend who died young a few years ago. The kid in the center is now a man and doing well as is the guy on the right.

Miles Davis' 1972 album "On the Corner".

I used to be a purist and dismiss Miles' electric music, but I've really gotten in to this phase of his career. In particular, "On the Corner" is prescient with its admixture of screaming, almost metallic guitars, minimalist bass (prefiguring a lot of "drum-and-bass" music by twenty years), Indian sitars and tablas, Brazilian percussion and above it all melodic abstractions from Miles and saxophonist Steve Grossman and bass clarinetist Bennie Maupin. The album is a series of highly-edited jams and sounds fresh even today.

While listening, I've been reading Phil Freeman's book Running the Voodoo Down: The Electric Music of Miles Davis - a very entertaining and informative read: http://www.amazon.com/Running-Voodoo...2197366&sr=1-1
