The Mission ( documentary , 2023 , mcbaine - moss )

a nat geo production about the life and predictably early death of john chau : an evangelical who snuck into the andaman islands to convert the north sentinelese , one of the last uncontacted hunter-gatherer peoples in the world .

i don't do a lot of docos , this was worth it . i'd read and an early review and had been on the lookout to see this . recommend !

Movies I watched this weekend:
Death of Stalin: sharp script, loved Steve Buscemi's performance, recommend this one
Wolf of Wall Street: strong dislike, 3.5 hours of absolutely nothing interesting happening
The Jerk: surprisingly low joke density, but every once in a while a fantastically funny bit (like the sniper), Bernadette Peters is delightful
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish: great combination of tension, emotion, and comedy, impressive animation

Margot Robbie's scene and the quaalude are top notch.

Killers of the Flower Moon — The film lets you know what De Niro and DiCaprio’s characters are up to from the very beginning, which makes everything that follows uncomfortable viewing.

The Last Detail (1973) — Two navy lifers escort a young loser played by Randy Quaid to Portsmouth. Randy Quaid’s character accepts everything that life throws at him and thereby reaches some sort of transcendence — in contrast to Otis Young & Jack Nicholson’s characters, who are stuck where they are.

Nicholson’s performance is not as nuanced as his character in Five Easy Pieces or the kid brother in the King of Marvin Gardens. All the same, you can sympathize with Hal Ashby’s direction; Nicholson is just fun to watch. I wonder if “I am the one who knocks “ has its origin in “I AM the Shore Patrol!”

I watched Smoking Aces and Smoking Aces 2.

The first was an okay popcorn movie. It was absurd and the twist wasn't very surprising, but it was action filled and kinda fun.

Smoking Aces 2 is terrible. Even the assassins are basically identical.

Caught this Saturday night. Forgettable. Not particularly boring but there as nothing that made me care about any of the characters. Wound up falling asleep around the last 20-30 minutes (my theater did have reclining seats and a 24oz beer). 6/10.

My daughter requested this over the weekend.
1000001151.jpg

She made multiple observations- a) she knew how to play a couple of the pieces the string quartet was playing at the party, b) obviously, it's a Christmas movie; why would anyone think it isn't?, and c) that doesn't look like Professor Snape at all.

Maybe I can talk her into watching Die Hard 2 this weekend...

I've been watching loads of short films lately as I organise a monthly night showing films in a bar in Lisbon. Thing is, although I like to think I know something about feature length films, I quickly realised that people want to drink and smoke pretty frequently - it's a big part of why they are in a bar after all - and this isn't compatible with showing long films, so I bowed to the inevitable and made it a short film night, which means I have to educate myself as fast as possible as I'm really not an expert.

There are no rules as such but I tend to like strange, surreal, psychedelic films so that is what I tend to show. And if anyone has any tips for great and little-known films fitting that description please help me out as it gets harder and harder to find new films each month. Think I'm just about ready for this Weds, but after that...

These trailers are made of clips from the first few nights so should give you an idea of my type of gear
