i think the answer is contained in your question, grasshopper.
it got a lot of good press, but it wasn't different enough from rivera. the owner is a guy who doesn't wait around. we'll see if petty cash has different luck (my take was the rent prohibited the kind of pricing structure that would make it work, but maybe walter will have better luck selling upscale tacos ... and in fairness, they've got some baja hotshots who are helping out).

I'm actually a little surprised that upscale mariscos hasn't been more of a "thing." I've frequented a few authentic ceviche and fish taco places in the past that I always thought would play up in the right location at much higher prices. Especially with better consistency and ingredients.

It's good, and I'm not a massive fan of mexican usually, mostly because the product is usually of such a horrific standard and the technique is so poor that I really can't enjoy it. I haven't been to Mexico city so I've not really had good mexican, obviously. But all the spots people take me to that I just HAVE TO TRY have been incredibly pedestrian and if it were right next door to my house I still wouldn't even bother.

None of it is life changing food but I really do enjoy going there. We know what we like and we order lots of it. It's sort of a go when I'm hungry and in WeHo sort of thing. Both Walter and Bill seem to be there 24/7 to try and make it work and it is usually packed. For once, I actually enjoy the service I get in LA. In fact, I'll go as far as to say it has the best service in LA I've had besides Valentino or Rivera/Providence, and this is a very different kind of place.

I like the asada the best. Pig ear nachos I had before at a pop up and they're worth trying, but I'm sort of over the whole animal/a frame *****/crispy thing.

I will definitely go again when I'm in the mood for some chilled out food.

Speaking of, last night I had a few of the tacos from the family that's always at 7th/Mateo at night. I wouldn't tell someone to go out of their way to have them, but they're always pretty damn good, especially for $1 each.

I used to go to Handsome coffee which is close to there. Have you ever have Guerilla tacos? He's some fine dining dude that sets up next to Handsome a few days a week and I've been meaning to try it. But I stopped going because Handsome serves disgusting coffee.

Nah, I've always kind of despised the Arts District. There's one good gallery there and it's owned by friends, so I eat at this taco stand and go to Tony's maybe once a month. If I don't have cash I eat at Pizzanista, which is bland hipster pizza similar to Garage. I don't like spending a lot on fancy tacos, because it's never much better than the cheap stuff, if better at all.

Yeah, that's them. They use whole milk only, which I think is fine I don't mind that. What I mind is that they're so into this light roasting that all their coffee is extremely sour. Michael Phillips, the world barista champ dude is actually incredibly nice. Some of his employees have incredible egos, along with many others in NYC/SF/LA earning like 20k a year being baristas, not realizing that in Italy common students make better coffee than they do without any of the attitude.

Gorilla I might try at some point. I've had Egg Slut which is the other truck that shows up. I just don't care to wait more than 2 minutes on the side of the road for food, so I didn't go again after my 2nd time.
