^ Nice. I don't have mixed drinks a lot but I do like the Negroni when I do. I was in Miami Beach a few years ago for a conference and a few days vacation tacked on and wound up killing some time at the bar at my hotel where the bartender was talking to a friend who was a bartender at a different bar. They were talkings shop and mixing up Negroni variations that the friend kept trying. I wound up ordering a few and got pretty wrecked. (Wife found me later and was like "what happened?"). Some variant with mezcal in place of the gin was really good.

Had a Negroni at happy hour tonight. Nice mix. Equal parts Aviation gin, Aperol, Antica Formula, and a nice piece of lemon rind. Very refreshing.

It is still a Negroni with Aperol instead of Campari?

I've been drinking Aperol + soda + vermouth + bitters which is pretty light and refreshing.

I replace Campari with Aperol or any other less cloying substitute any chance given. Never see it as anything less than an improvement but just my own taste I guess.

Eh, it's just a riff on a drink.

Aperol is lighter due to the far lower ABV but they both have an orange component, a sweet component, and a layered bitter component. Campari is more robust, due to more bitter notes and the extra ETOH, but I found the Aperol to go well with the Aviation gin and the Antica Formula vermouth. Keep in mind Antica is far more robust than your usual sweet vermouth so basically it was balancing the combination of the two aperitivos is the way I view it. I think Antica + Campari might be heavier and less enjoyable for an afternoon cocktail.

The Springbank is a great example of a complex subtly peated whisky in my opinion. Enjoying the Red Spot but overpriced for what it delivers. At nearly 2.5 times the price of the Green Spot, I can’t say I’d recommend despite being quite good.

Bloody Kiwis first they don’t make the RWC final and now I find out that Squealing Pig Pinot Noir which originally was a straight Central Otago wine is now blended with grapes from Marlborough...Scheisse!

Any way does a functional job of washing down a penne pasta with fresh parsley, rosemary and oregano with just plucked garlic and chili with S&BP.

How is it compared to the 16? Part of me is curious to try it. Another part of me fears it's going to fall into gimmicky bottles that aren't worth it compared to the standard (see House of Lannister edition)

I would say try before you buy. It’s nothing like the 16. Less sherry influence and less smoke. The peat comes off as a light hop in the malt Sort of effervescence peat. Dry finish does linger.
