What about go to drinks when you're out?
Manhattans and Negronis I make all the time at home, so I usually skip them.
It's been a thing for awhile, but I still love the Penicillin.
The ginger, the Islay Scotch. I'm too lazy to do them myself.
320 main in Seal nails them.
I'll vote for a Sidecar or Palmetto. Two of my faves.

Barrel aged Negroni is an elixir of the God's. But the dude is new to this, we can't start him out with something mindblowing like that. Get the basics down (while your barrel is aging).

I still think the best drink I've ever had was the Trident (for the crowd, Negroni variant with sherry, Cynar, aquavit) that I was barrel aging and forgot about for a few months. It was unreal. All the harshness gone, everything melded together, so much depth.

Here's the backstory to the Trident, from its creator.

I order the happy hour special. If it’s not happy hour, a drink with ingredients I don’t have at home. I can make a Negroni or Manhattan at home. No need to buy one for $15 when I’m out.

There's one place down in Laguna that kind of specializes in, and doesn't get pissed when you order a Ramos Gin Fizz.
And now Royal Hawaiian back open for tiki drinks.
I think I'll bounce between those for a bit.

Many years ago, I had a fantastic Negroni variant at a Philadelphia bar—I think it was the Franklin—consisting of rhum agricole, Cocchi Rosa, and Gran Classico. Served in a rocks glass with a big cube of ice with a bit of sea salt on top. I recreated the drink at home and drank many of them, but didn’t rebuy the liquors because I didn’t know what else to make with them.

+1. I usually go for whatever I couldn't easily make at home. Infusions or syrups, weird ingredients that I don't want to buy a whole bottle of to try. Other option is drinks that are hard to get the balance just right and you want to see what a pro version ought to taste like.

I had a neat cocktail with China China amaro a couple weeks ago. Not common for me to run across a liqueur that I've never even heard of before, much less see it in a drink, so I had to give it a try. Ended up being a good choice, was tasty.

Halfway crooks is delicious. That was their ubrik American ipa. They have a page of lagers and a page of ales. All are drinkable and refreshing. And the bar is probably the best vibes in atlanta.

There's a restaurant in DC called Chaplin's that has happy hour draft cocktails for under $7. One of them mixes rye, peychaud's, cynar, absinthe, and some kind of pineapple rum blend. It's one of the strongest, cheapest, most delicious cocktails I've ever gotten out.
