The new Marvington II from weathered fig looks amazing!

You aren't kidding. I'm dying to try something with mini-ripple but I already have a dark brown/mocha oil roughout on 2040. Just a bit too similar to the Marvington 2's on the 1035.

Still very tempting.

I received my Oiled Shell pair today, and they are fantastic. The shell is very oily (hence the name) and changes a lot in color depending on the light as you’d expect.

And finally, here is one with some natural shell Oakstreets to get a sense of the color compared to Horween.

I bet there are other reasons (e.g. leather thickness), but without lining, you need more shell. In an unlined boot with external heel counter panel (like Viberg's service boot), the pieces of leather that constitute the shaft continue under the heel counter around the back of the foot. In a lined boot, those panels tend to end at the heel counter. For an illustration, you can see Grant Stone's pattern (2) here: https://www.grantstoneshoes.com/pages/make.

The heel counter doesn’t extend into the shaft in unlined boots. If it did it would be nearly impossible to bend the ankle. Heel counters cup the heel the same in unlined as lined.

Edit: nvm I misread what you wrote. Are there any cross section pics of lined and unlined vibergs? I’d be interested in seeing this.
