I personally would never wear a vest buttoned outside of a 3pc suit. But that's just me, I don't jive for the super prep look, although I've been known to sport a sweatervest.

It's all about the person who wears it - if you can pull off certain types of clothing you can do it, but if not it does look awful - so ask advice of close friends!!

To me the obvious "rule" is: avoid a suit vest if you want to wear it casually. That means no super delicate fabrics and no silk back!
A casual vest to me should be sturdier and more "fun". I got a patchwork plaid blue and thin wool vest that works great casually, aswell as a really rugged carhartt canvas vest (and hopefully i´ll get a plaid heavy wool vest from Filson as Robin posted).

That looks terrible. His shirt is too big, the vest looks too small, belt doesn't look good with those shoes, and his posture is pretty bad as well.

I'm surprised so many don't like the look. I think it can look fine so long as the vest doesn't look like a 3pc orphan. The vest breaks up the top nicely, especially with long sleeve button ups which oftentimes look monotonous.

I can't wrap my head around this thread. I think they can definitely look good. I like them in a more workwear/old school detective way. So not with skinny jeans and sneakers. Always with a long sleeve shirt, either a henley or a button up. I think a charcoal wool herringbone vest looks great buttoned up with blue jeans and some chunky boots. It can look fantastic with slightly trousers instead of jeans. But if the vest matches the pants, one should wear the whole 3pc suit. Look at vests on the UO site and you can see a series of epic fails. Some of the Rag & Bone vests could like great with jeans IMO. The metal buttons help. Vests need to at least look a little functional if you wear them with jeans.

But these are just my opinions!

Didn't you post a vested look last year or so with an orange tie? I really liked that one.

Well, normally I'd wear a waistcoat with 3pc suits, I always wear vests with suits, sometimes mismatchd, when I've bought as a 2pc. But let me talk about waistcoats as casual, I think it can be pulled off, with a good pair of khakis, maybe some dark jeans, and a button up or polo shirt, and personally, I like waistcoats so much I wear them even with bermuda shorts, but of course less tailored no silk back waistcoats, but thats just me.

If you include sweater vests in your consideration, I do it more often than not during the cooler months of the year. I also have a couple of other vests that see a good amount of wear, absent a suit or sport coat. To my eye, the look is quite nice!

wow, i saw not one guy in that slideshow who wore a vest correctly (one guy looks like he was wearing a tuxedo vest with A&F jeans... terrible). Not surprisingly the females with the healthy chests wore the vests best imo. Personally, I do own 2 vintage vests that fit me great, but always feel too self aware the few times I wore them. To the OP, good luck making them work for you and if you ever decide to try it out, post a fit pic for us to critique, thanks!
