Really interested in how this comes out as the Bamboo form that book has been on my list for a while. Looking forward to seeing the results and your impressions.

Matthew's most recent jacket is the same cloth (but with a red over-check). He said it stands up great to heat and humidity, which is what I am after.

FYI, I'm pretty sure bamboo = rayon

I asked about that and they said, per the mill, it's a 100% natural fiber. I won't pretend to know enough about chemistry or the ins-and-outs of material classification to make a definitive argument, but it certainly didn't feel or look synthetic.

EDIT: Just dug up a pretty decent one-pager from Patagonia. As best I can tell the Portofino bamboo is most similar to the bast-fiber linen material they describe, as the look and feel is certainly similar to linen. As I said, it didn't look or feel like any rayon I'd ever handled and I would find it hard to believe they'd include a shoddily-made, synthetic cloth in a bunch of otherwise tremendous options. But weirder things have happened...

Gents, I'm looking for fabric for a casual navy blazer/odd jacket. I would like some interest to the weave like a hopsack or a very pronounced serge. I hope to find something very versatile (maybe like the LL ultimate blazer fabric) and in approximately the same shade and depth of colour like the Minnis 520 fresco. Any recommendations?

What weight you want ? If you want sth heavy. Fox have a very nice 15oz hopsack and the Serge. I have an odd jacket from the hopsack which is amazing. If you want sth ligher ciaccioppoli have one mohair/ wool blend hopsack in high twist which is also very good

Sounds very nice, was actually looking at something around 14 oz and then maybe go partly lined, so the fox might be a winner. Would be very interested to see a photo or two of your jacket if possible :)

Thanks a lot!

There is a really nice navy 4 ply hopsack in the Tip Top jacketing book. Not sure what mill it's from, but I have had really good luck in the past with two fabrics from them.

If they are indeed made in the second (non-rayon way), should be interesting to see how they turn out. I liked some of the fabrics in that book, but couldn't pull the trigger because of my rayon/bamboo worries

I'm not too concerned about it. The hand was far from synthetic-feeling and if it wears/makes up well enough to get an endorsement from the tailor, I'm not losing sleep over its manufacturing process.

If it's the same one they had years ago, that stuff is awesome.

Love the blazer I have from it.

No h8 but have the boys from Carlisle ever even seen humidity?

Regular summer trips to DC (and now Houston) lend them some credibility.

I was looking through the Smiths Steadfast book today, and found a hopsack that is quite nice-looking and not the usual sort. More of a hex weave. I don't know if that particular book had been updated-- I don't see that pattern on their website.

My favorite sport coat is a brown/ green wool silk blend from their jacketing book that I adore. I was so impressed that I had a top coat made for my wife out of their coatings, a really pretty grey and cream herringbone. Naturally, she picked the most expensive fabric in the book...

Was this the Portofino fabric from Delfino?
