A particularly nice section of the suburban sprawl around DC, but I'd never have considered it a city either.

Close to Atlanta is a plus?

My sentiments exactly, although people moving here from Alabama are quite excited and almost awed by Atlanta ("more than 2 traffic lights", one said)!

But then again, they are moving from Alabama.

That said ... I do like Chicago ... but not enough to live there.

Minneapolis (though maybe not truly underrated)
Columbus, OH (definitely)
Pittsburgh, PA (definitely underrated - not the dirty old steel town of the past)
Milwaukee, WI
Nashville, TN

Cheers,
Matt in Atlanta

Good God, Dayton is so awful. But yes, Columbus is great.
I also have a great time whenever I am in Richmond lately

I enjoyed living in Columbus, but it is really geared toward a younger crowd. If you're married and 45, but still like to stay social, go out and enjoy the city, you're going to find yourself pretty limited in Columbus.

For all it's amenities, the droves of cloying Midwesterners really bring down Chicago..

What's with the c-bus love?

Columbus, OH is a god forsaken communist **** hole.

No shopping, no culture (unless you like it, the strip mall).

Close to shopping, food, and such which Birmingham doesn't offer.
