Hey,

If I get a Topy or even a toe tap on my AE shoes, would it affect the AE reconditioning service? would they reject it? I searched the forums but all I can find is leather soles vs topey soles debates.

Anyone try to recondition with these attributes?

Thank you!

I can't see why it would, as you have to pay for new soles anyway.

That wouldn't make sense to me. They are removing the entire sole anyways and usually adding new cork depending on which service you choose. They keep the last itself but completely replace the sole.

I don't understand. Are you saying if you have a local cobbler resole your shoes, AE will not take them back for a recraft?

^^ if that's the case, that's completely asinine for a service you pay for. I could understand if it were free for the life of the shoe or something...

I contacted Allen Edmonds about this, as I live in New York and without Topys, leather soles are shredded in about 6 months. They told me it would be fine and would not prevent them from recrafting.

I have also heard that if you have it resoled by someone other than them, they won't recraft it. Doesn't bother me too much though as a good resoling costs about the same as recrafting anyways--might as well have the welt replaced, finish stripped and redone, etc at the same time.

With all of the sales always going on, does it even make financial sense to recraft AEs?

I thought they were considered more disposible rain day shoes. If you pick them up for a couple hundred, and the price of recrafting is almost like buying a new pair. I guess if they are a discontinued model or if they have sentimental value it would make sense.

I had 2 pair of AE that had half soles done by a local cobbler. AE recrafted both. I asked them before sending them in and they said it depends on how it was resoled. If it was done correctly, they can recraft. If it was not done correctly, I'm guessing adhesive etc., they cannot recraft.

They told me to send them in and they would let me know if they could be recrafted. Both of mine were able to be recrafted. So I guess it is a case-by-case basis if you have had work done by a non-AE cobbbler.

$99 for recraft. +$200 new pair(on sale, seconds, B&S etc) or $325 retail. Sometimes savings aren't really that great, but they're still savings nonetheless.

Consider EG, Lobbs on B&S which goes for $500-$800. Recraft service = financial ruin.

the thing is that my experience from putting topy rubber soles on shoes is that if you keep the topys in good shape (by replacing them when they start to wear out at the edges), the sole of the shoe tends to last longer than the upper. So why worry about resoling? Or have I missed something?

I think the conversation went towards resoling because it was mentioned that a crappy resole job would prevent AE from recrafting.

In general, yes, Topys will extend the life of the sole. I have them on most of my shoes. Wish I didn't have to, but I don't want to resole every 9 months.

It may not void factory resoling but it will certainly help A-void it. Original leather soles can last indefinitely, with periodic changes to the rubber sole protector.
