Pfft. You think every house comes with a fire pit here? No, you gotta pay extra for that...not to mention the fireglass.

As we are settled in our dream house I'm glad people are leaving California too. Really does great things for my property value. Someone from CA just overpaid by about 250k on a house by the entrance to our neighborhood. God bless their hearts.

i can't see that it would matter too much if you plan on croaking in your house, meanwhile that idiotic cali money is gonna drive up the price of a bunch of ancillary goods n services (via anchoring per previous convo) its funny how hellbent americans are on obliterating our own currency with ****** value concessions (not you but the aggregate effect imo is to blur the dollar itself)

I suppose per another previous conversation I should hope our property values plummet, so I pay less property tax, until they magically quadruple at the moment I want to sell.

Every time a house sells around here I do a little happy dance. Because chances are it's a big old property tax rebase. The 70-something former College of Marin professor who's moving out was paying $6,500 a year thanks to Prop. 13, but the Uber exec who's moving in will be paying $40,000*.

I mean, if it was $2, I wouldn't do it. Usually around here it is like 1/3 of the price. $5 vs $15.

They are a mixed bag. In populated enough places/busy times, they can work because they can get you decent matches. Pair up with 1-2 other people in your neighborhood at rush hour and then head downtown...faster than the bus for a lot of people and often only a couple of bucks extra.

Now that they emphasize walking to a convenient corner rather than getting picked up/dropped off exactly at your door, they have better potential for routing. Of course that goes out the window when your driver doesn't take a sensible route and ends up on a completely opposite corner than you were waiting on (or ends up driving by the place you just walked from).

I've had good luck with Via--they seem to have better routing since they were built up as shared-rides first. They will actually give you options in the app like "You can get picked up on this corner in 4 minutes and arrive by X:XX for $Y or you can walk to this other corner in 6 minutes and arrive by W:WW for $Z". Only problem is that they don't have many drivers in my area so often the app just says "no cars available".

I took a pool through the ghetto once and it was hilarious.

I was the only person in and out of that car who was paying for their own ride. Every other passenger had some other person who summoned the car and told them where to wait. None of them were down with the "walk half a block so the driver doesnt have to turn down a one way going the opposite direction of the other riders" thing.

Favorite part was when we are rolling down a narrow street with lots of young men loitering around, my driver (who was herself a middle aged, black, south side resident) starts going "ooh, I don't like this, I don't like this one bit"

The passenger tries to reassure her by saying "oh, they just selling drugs"... She did not find that reassuring.

Just went to Starbuck to get a grande Pike brew. When I got to the cashier, though, I said "venti Pike." I never, ever order venti size but irregardless I said those fateful words as if I were automelton or something. Now I got more coffee than I need will probably post a lot later today to desselpate energy.
