right, I'd agree on the cost thing, especially when you add cars + train tickets + taxes, propane tanks for bbq's, opening and closing of pool, landscaping, yearly 100+ person summer BBQ's that my boy and I go in for for appr $5K, etc.

FTFY..

people with those giant flame-throwing BBQ's are usually terrible cooks.

Nah. Between his wife, him, my sis in law and a few friends(one is a chef from Syracuse), it's a good time. And with that many people, you don't get fancy. "Our yearly" BBQ the week after the 4th of July was appr 120 people. His wife's brother had a "small" BBQ a few weeks later. Said he was expecting 30-ish people. Apr 70 showed.

When it is that big, you stick to the basics. When it is a smaller family/friends group, that is when you get all flamboyant.

My new building has four pretty nice seeming Weber propane grills (although, hooked up to a gas line so...methane grills?).

Tried one out the other day on a steak, thing got very hot and made some lovely crunchy bits...and I didn't have to move to a suburb.

I kind of disagree with this. If you live just outside of the city your taxes are insane, you need a car with all of the expenses associated with it, and you have house maintenance. I really don't buy the whole "NYC is expensive" cry. Sure, space is expensive, but if you're paying $2,000 a month for something in NYC, you're most likely going to spend $2,000 on something in the suburbs. From a dollar for dollar standpoint, the NYC burbs comes with more taxes, more travel costs, and more expenses.
Images like this are useless on me. It looks like boredom and death, imo.

+1

A good friend/family lives in Washingtonville, NY(about 1.25 hrs away form midtown) His mortgage and my payment are appr the same.
He pays more taxes. He and his wife have 2 cars....so 2 tanks of gas. 1 insurance payment/car payment(he is a special finance mgr at a dealership so the just pay for 1.) They have to drive the 3 kids everywhere so gas tanks are filed up all the time. They have to drive for groceries/newspapers/etc. Dude has to buy tools/lawn mowers/power washers/etc. Maintenance is a ***** he tells me.

My brother and his family lives 10 minutes away from my friend's family. I use them both as my Summer abode.

Yeah, they have more property than me.....but he always tells me that his expenses are too bookoo!

(They do have great deals on cases of beer and big box type stores: Home Depot/Costco/etc. But you have to drive to just get there.)

First, where the hell are you going to find a nice $2000 one bedroom apartment? I always recited pB's mantra until I moved. Yes I have to commute, which on some days takes its toll. However, my taxes are lower than they were in the city, my family room is larger than my entire apartment was, I don't need a private school for any kids, I have a BBQ and soon to be an oyster roast pit, and a decent yard.

I know that it's just because different people want different things, and I don't mean to say you shouldn't enjoy it, but I cannot fathom being happy living in the places you guys describe. Between the noise, people everywhere, and lack of space (both indoor and outdoor), I would be miserable all the time.

Also, the next person to use "BBQ" as a synonym for "grill" is getting pistol whipped. Z, it's especially galling to see you do it. Even you mutton-eating Kentuckians should know better.

And when are you having us all over for burgers and oysters?

It's a once a year thing. The Sat after the 4th of July.

Been going on since 2009....due to the fact that my older sis was killed in a motorcycle accident in Dec 2008. At the wake.....many of my friends got together and said that we only get together like this at wakes, etc. So appr 20 of us got together for dinner in Jan of 2009 and then me and my boy planned the BBQ for that Summer. We wanted it to be a tradition: Dinner in Jan and BBQ in July.

It got bigger in the years following(we didn't do it 1 year)...but people just don't know how to act: pissing in my boy's sink in his basement bathroom/dudes dropping shrimp all over his yard/one dude brought a 6 pack of Guinness and hid it in my boy's utility room and told this chick that I was ******* around with..."don't say anything." She did. Dudes just thinking that they could smoke weed in his garage-he has 3 children and many more(my nieces) were at the BBQ/dudes coming through EMPTY HANDED...after I reached out and said....."we don't need $$, just bring what you drink!" Dudes walking up and asking...:you don't have any Hennessy up in here?' We got beer mugs made for the initial 2009 BBQ....dudes said..."you didn't get my name on it?"

Just some BS. With over 100 people.....there are bound to be loads of "crunchy" people.

But we still did it this year. Appr 125 people. Better results: people brought stuff/crunchy people were not invited/etc. But it is still a lot of ******* work.

BBQ was Sat. I went up Thurs. We had to shop. Clean up his back yard, pool and outdoor kitchen. Wait for porta potty delivery. Wait for tent delivery(over part of his deck.) Food prep. Power-wash and clean the deck. Wait for karaoke delivery(which we didn;t use...just too many people). Go and pick up my brother's DJ equipment(he had just had back surgery). Set up outdoor seating and chairs. Etc Etc.

That Sunday was the World Cup Final. I was ******* beat. And our friends from Syracuse usually stay in a hotel nearby and leave on Sunday afternoon. I could not wait for them to leave. Went inside and relaxed and watched the final. Then I wanted to take a nap.

My brother text's me asking if we can help him load his DJ equip(which he left over) as he could not with his back. So I say..sure. I tell my boy(I was staying at his casa for the wknd) and he says..."let's take it there". He was sleeping when my bro text'd so I didn't think that was an option. So we loaded up his equip and took it over.

Doesn't sound like much.....but consider the cleanup/hosting/photographing/drinking during Thurs and Fri and not really enjoying myself/etc........**** is WORK!

It looks like relaxation and stress relief to me. Cannot wait to get the backyard done next year.

I spent a week in downtown San Diego over Labour Day. A great ******* reminder why I do not live in an urban setting anymore.

I'd love to have a view like Piob's at the end of the day, sans all the cacophony and distracting lights of a city. That said, I also really appreciate a good view of a city like NYC from high up a building. I'd want both, ideally, but that's impossible.

At my current stage in life, I'd opt for the city. But when I'm older and more settled down, I'd probably want something like Piob's.

I think that's the dichotomy we're seeing here: young, hip, cool people vs. old farts.

How far out of the city did you move? My guess is significantly.

I was living in the Flatiron District in a full service building and had a layover stint on the UES while I was in the process of moving. I am now in lower Fairfield County, not as far out a Larry though. It's abt 50 mins by train to GCT. Excluding Bronxville, any of the places I liked (and would fit in) in Westchester County were fairly close to the border with CT. So it became a 40 min train ride vs. 50/55. At that point, it was is $25K or so more in property taxes (smaller house, less appealing town) worth getting off the train 15 mins sooner? When I started adding up the years ($100k in 4 years), moving where I did turned into a no brainer.

I know that it's just because different people want different things, and I don't mean to say you shouldn't enjoy it, but I cannot fathom being happy living in the places you guys describe. Ahhh guess being a Buckeye makes it even worse? Interestingly, I never say BBQ when referring to the grill. It is always grill, but will occasionally write BBW particularly if in hurry like I am often at work.
