I'm pissed because a co-worker moved to another group and my boss is interviewing for the job and asked me to come up with interview questions. Wtf? He should come up with interview questions.

Too soon to say... There are definitely some new raised edges and it could still get worse.

Worst part is... I literally signed my lease renewal on Friday.

Now I am not so sure I want to stay here another year... Even if the floor is fine, the flooding could happen again. And if the floor needs replacing, I don't really want to go through that process again (it is almost as much work as moving... Have to pack everything up in half the apartment and move it to the other half, and then repeat for the other side).

At least I was at home... Was able to pick everything valuable off the ground... No instruments or electronics got wet this time.

I know it's a tired SF trope, but what you guys are talking about it the difference between "fashion" and "style."

Style is how you define yourself. Fashion is how everyone defines you.

My style is boring. Normal shirt and slacks but it is me. I have seen people who are trying to be fashionable but have no style because they are just wearing what
some men's magazine said was in fashion.

Just my opinion.

This could be a good sign for you. Candidate selection is a supervisory-type responsibility.

Plus, from a practical perspective, you can help find someone you like.

That sucks man. My upstairs neighbor's bathroom flooded recently and now cracks and stains are coming through my ceiling.

I am trying to do important work but there are a bunch of kids playing some kind of stupid game and screaming really loudly, to where I cannot concentrate. They are driving me nuts.

Sorry to hear that OTC. I actually came here to post a somewhat related issue. I had been waiting almost a month to get a somewhat sizable deposit back from the property management company that managed the condo I was renting on behalf of the owners. When I spoke to the owner of the company a little over a week ago he indicated everything looked fine and they would only be deducting a small cleaning fee for some frozen food I left in the freezer by mistake.

Got a letter and check in the mail today. They removed $80 for cleaning and another $950 to "refinish the flooring." :fu:

Those floors already were scratched up when I moved in and I have photographic evidence of that. I do know that my bed caused one bad spot in the bedroom and the floor was slightly worn in another from my office chair, but it's completely unreasonable to charge me for refinishing the whole apartment. Nothing about this was discussed with me when I called.

I'll be spending my evening researching options, but I was relying on this money to cover some expenses coming up.

Anyone have experience dealing with this?

Obviously rental laws vary widely by town... But here in Chicago at least, no ******* way can they withhold money because you left something in the freezer. You have to have solid evidence and actual invoices for anything you withhold. That doesn't mean scumbags won't try to, but if you fight it, the laws make it incredibly difficult to withhold from a deposit of a tenant who moved out on time and didn't start the place on fire. So much so that nowadays, most people don't even take a deposit... They just charge a $250 move in fee and leave it at that.

The wood refinishing is iffy... But sounds like bullshit. If you caused major damage, they could withhold... But they also would have noticed it right away. Normal wear and tear is not your responsibility... Beds leaving a mark is just the cost of having tenants churn.

Fight him on it. Also make sure he paid you within the mandatory time frame..
Call him on any irregularities with the deposit. Here, they have to pay a government specified amount of quarterly interest--did he pay you the right amount (and on the full deposit of course). Here, they are also required to keep deposits in separate bank accounts--did he follow that rule to the letter of the law?

Generally, unless you destroy the place, you should get your deposit back (although a lot of people don't stand up for themselves and let landlords keep some of it).

I love security deposit cases here in PA. If the secdep (that's special legal terminology for security deposit) is withheld without good cause the tenant can get treble damages which pays for my fee.

I lived in the same place in Athens for seven years; they got bought out by a new management company right before I left. Said management company was a bunch of dickbags and tried to screw me out of my deposit. Their office goon ignored my calls for awhile, then they started pulling the "check is in the mail" schtick.

Sent them a registered letter with a form letter from a lawyer informing them that they were liable for triple the deposit if they refused to pay it. I got the check two days later. Mmmmm.
