I remember years ago the wife and I were scuba diving on the WW2 wrecks out of Morehead City and we ventured South for an afternoon near Camp Lejeune. Maybe Onslow Beach? It was covered with the biggest dudes and sketchiest women I've ever seen. As I walked into the bar, a shirtless guy walking out gave me a relatively friendly forearm smash, explaining "that's for being taller than me motherfucker." Across his very broad back, he had tattooed in 6 inch letters one simple credo: BEER.

Seems about right. I can almost picture the most likely spots in Jacksonville or Atlantic Beach this would have occurred at! Until last summer, I hadn't been down there since 2005 or 2006 (in 2022 we went to Wilmington for spring break with the kids but didn't make it up to Lejeune) but I went back again to drop my nephew off at Lejeune and while the place has cleaned up considerably (and especially since I got my first taste of Lejeune water back in '97), it still felt surprisingly familiar... even if the best strip clubs had changed names!

if i had to be on the east coast NC seems like a reasonable place to live

I've been up and down the east coast and I'm pretty well settled on buying a second home somewhere between Myrtle Beach, SC and Jacksonville, NC at some point. The beaches are much nicer than most of the places further south of there (excluding the Gulf side of Florida from Clearwater down to Naples), considerably less crowded, and significantly more affordable. I had been telling my wife for years that Carolina Beach or Topsail Island or Surf City would be a perfect retirement spot but she never bought into it until we went down there and she saw for herself. The OBX gets all the buzz, but I've been out there a few times and it's just too isolated for me. Topsail seems like the perfect place to me - nice beaches, easy drive to civilization in Wilmington or Jacksonville and not terribly far to Raleigh and the RTP for a bit more culture when needed.

Actually, I suspect that's the reason Tabasco doesn't show up here.

The "uniquely popular" thing has been a trend in these sort of map visualizations for a while, everything from the "regional words for X" to "trends in p0rn viewing".

Like...attractive blondes are popular everywhere, so you use some sort of simple algorithm that looks for breaks from the national trend.
pornhub-relative.jpeg.jpeg

Hentai is definitely not the most popular search in California, but it is far more popular in CA than it is in Iowa where all the white farmers don't even know what it is.

What's interesting about all these kinds of charts is that they are actually pretty meaningless. It is almost always just noise.

OBX beaches aren't generally as nice either. We stayed at Topsail Island last year for a week. It was really nice, but house prices have exploded (like everywhere). Most of the execs at my company have a beach house and it is always Emerald Isle, Topsail, etc.

If you do them right they capture something--like that 2017 pornhub one actually has *some* reasonable looking validity.

When I was looking for the image, I saw a more recent pornhub one where they tried to give every state a unique thing and it got too specific and made no sense. Just capturing noise because not every state is going to have some uniquely popular trend...regional shifts make far more sense.

Like...the hentai-coast and the BW-love-belt in that 2017 map make a lot of sense.

Places my SSN has been part of a data breach over the past year: Dr.'s office, dentists office, dental insurance, mortgage company, and I feel like I am forgetting one. I sign up for the credit monitoring and today is the first time I had "you already have an account with us" come up so I can't force a company to spend extra on my data protection.

Mom's side family used to have a cottage at Wrightsville Beach, on the sound side, near the bridge to Wilmington. We'd go there every summer when I was a kid. My d!ckhead grandfather sold the place when I was a teen. In retrospect, it was pretty ramshackle, and probably needed to be rebuilt completely, but it included waterfront access and its own pier, and I had some good memories from there. I'm sure it'd be worth a ton now.
