I think that this is one thing the world doesn't get. If the top US athletes did play soccer, we would easily dominate.
Barry Sanders as playmaker? Deion Sanders on the wing? Strikers like Jerry Rice and Michael Jordan? Ray Lewis as hardman in the midfield? Marshall Faulk?
I think that as more americans play soccer and the overall level of athletes we have playing improves, you're going to see much more flair from American coaches.
You will soon be able to legitimately field a team of guys over 6-feet tall with 4.5 speed in the 40. Talk about being able to engage in total football. I think you will see some of that with Arena's approach now. Many of the Americans are going to switch from defense to attack during the match. This will both allow players to rest and create runs from interesting places as well as man marking problems for the opposition.
