Don't go to Hodinkee if you've just had lunch. Your eyes will be met by a horrifying IWC watch that looks like it could have been produced by Victorinox or Kickstarter. What happened to this house?
Now you got me intrigued and I have to look

Wait - do you mean the "IWC Ingenieur Chronograph Sport Edition '50th Anniversary of Mercedes-AMG'"? Or do you mean the equally clumsily-named "IWC Aquatimer Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month Edition '50 Years Aquatimer'"?

They're both pretty unappealing, in both design and name.

All I saw was the AMG watch. Genta should be rolling over in his grave if he saw what IWC did to his Ingenieur watch.

I'm shocked but not surprised. The vintage watch market has become as insane as the contemporary art market. The driver of the former is the Rolex Daytona, and this it is the ultimate Daytona. I feel a bit sad that this watch is likely to see the inside of a safe deposit box rather than someone's wrist.

I guess the fact that part of the price went to charity, pushed it up even more. At least US guys can deduct part of the price in taxes.

Just got my Omega FOIS. For a 14mm thick watch it doesn't wear as thick as I thought it would. I'm liking the smaller size since my Seamaster and RO 15400 are both 41mm. At under 40 this feels like it fits my wrist better. The strap is nice but a little tough to use.

Although it was for charity, if you received something in exchange for your bid to the charity, then you can't deduct it. If it was just a charitable donation and you didn't receive goods for it, then you can deduct it. I'm not an accountant, but that is what was explained to me when my wife had the winning bid on something for a charity auction (that was a couple of years ago, I'm not sure if anything has changed allowing someone to deduct part of the purchase even if they received goods).

This has been my experience. Every year, I go a few art auction parties that support local art non-profits. I can deduct a portion of the price of the entry ticket, but not any part of the cost of an artwork that I win.

I stand corrected on the charity details. Then it's a real price, which makes it even more staggering.
