Anyone here have any experience with these protective sticker kits?

I wear the crap out of my watches and under normal circumstances don't mind the odd scratch here and there, but I have something platinum incoming and feel like perhaps some protective film on the clasp wouldn't be the worst idea.

I feel like the only guy on here that can potentially answer this question would be Foo. And he bailed on us when he got made at his Patek AD. Sorry you missed your chance for any real world experience.

If you are willing to adjust your body contortions as a matter of course, Dino, our esteemed contributor, can tell you how to stop botching your clasps without protective film.

So do you wanna be a Foo or a Dino?

I haven't used those protective stickers. However, the nice thing about platinum, is its much more durable and harder (although brittle) than gold, so its less likely to develop the hairline scratches that happen to gold, simple from rubbing against a nice cotton dress shirt cuff. In addition, from more than one article I've read, unlike gold or steel, which when polished actually loses small amounts of metal, with platinum, there is no metal loss! Scratches on platinum are merely molecules being moved, rather than it being chipped away or lost. Therefore, the technique used actually moves metal around to repair scratches, rather than removing it. Personally, I wouldn't worry about it, especially if you wear long sleeves to protect it most of the time.

A few articles about platinum.

When polishing platinum, there is generally considered to be "no metal loss" because the process primarily involves smoothing out surface scratches by moving the metal back into place rather than actually removing material, unlike with softer metals like gold where some material is always removed during polishing; however, with very deep scratches or extensive wear, a minimal amount of metal might be removed during professional polishing.

Platinum takes more effort to polish, for the simple reason that it does not wear as other precious metals do; consequently, it doesn't follow the same metallurgical rules. Platinum, you see, has a "liquid" surface. Other metals lose mass over time - prongs wear thin, shanks get thinner, decorations such as Florentine or engravings wear down. All of these deterioration take a lot longer with platinum. The metal even scratches differently: When you scratch platinum, you are actually just moving the metal aside, whereas other precious metals lose surface area. While this is a major advantage in durability and contributes to the strength of platinum, it also makes the polishing process more difficult.

Congrats on your new Reverso! While I find the Duo a bit too thick for my taste, that is the first version I've seen where I really liked both sides of the watch. Usually, they stick you with one dial that is ugly, this one both sides are beautiful! Congrats again and enjoy it. Cheers

Thanks man. While I was debating between the Cartier tank or reverso, the thickness def came up. But this blue dial with the rose gold case just spoke to me. It is “relatively” still on the thinner side compared to the other sports watches I own. I’ll for sure enjoy wearing it.

On the side note, just for fun, I tried on the black enamel tiger reverso. Supposedly they enamel the whole case and chiseled the tiger out of the gold case. Wild craftsmanship on this tiny thing!

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
