What in the world is going on with these indie watchmakers and their dials :confused2: :fu:

Sometimes the wheel does not need to be reinvented. You have a great movement, great finishing, you don’t need gimmicks or offset small seconds, please stop this insanity.

Edit: taking a second look, the crown is too big for the case. I’m sure that was a design decision but just stop it 👨‍🔧. Classic designs are classic for a reason.

And THAT is precisely where inide watchmakers go wrong: They all know they're either new, unproven, isolated, or a combination of these things, and they purposefully go out of their way to create something that's so different that it looks and feels odd. They reinvent the wheel constantly and take pride in it because, you know, they're "independent."

I'm convinced that indies are for RedBar attendees and The Rolex Forum posters who want bragging rights over their peers with pedestrian watches that anybody with money can get.

I do think indies are prevailingly a social media flex.

The allure of “if you know, you know” is pretty silly in real life (otherwise, why would there be an impulse to share these watches with the internet watch community - you know, the people who do know?).

And the tyranny of ubiquitous icons is much overblown. Most people don’t have a clue about even the most iconic/cliche watches.

It was my grail watch in college. It took me over 2 years to find an AD who would sell me one at list price. I bought it a little over 27 years ago...it's still my favorite!

wow, only two years and (presumably) no buying history? you certainly are lucky! ;)

We are in the era of increasingly technically overcomplicated yet absolutely hideous watches that appeal to terminally online morons only. May this phase of watch collector culture age worse than the integrated bracelet sports watch craze.

Except sometimes they get it, like Naoya Hida, stay within the lines, do an OK job and sell at a 3x premium vs FPV (Foo Perceived Value) due to the lack of competition.
