That's exactly what I did. Wore the Sub as a One Watch. JLC dress watch I got last year was the first real luxury watch purchased since 2000.

Then again I don't move in Patek circles or have the expendable cash to collect them.
I did the same - I had a stainless Sub for years as my 1 watch, and then I got a dress watch and after that purchase, it was all over... I started adding to the collection and fell in love with AP's design language, PP and Cartier, etc. Then I had to have various color dials, various shapes, etc. I still have the one stainless steel Sub and I am not looking for any more Rolexes lol

I see

4 women and 5 men... I was actually surprised at how many women embrace that field. What sort of diversity are you looking for at Vallee de Joux vs Glashutte? Isn't it a German company? Do you expect a Black or Latino graduates for a program in Germany? And we don't really know the backgrounds of any of these folks, there may have been a few immigrants from Poland/Russia, etc.

I wasn't the one that made the diversity comment, but okay.

Danièla Dufour is half black. I believe she works at PP now.

Got this Cartier Divan from family quite a while ago, and after wearing it ever since I have to accept that I need to change that strap. It's not the original already (I have that one in a box, it's not in the best shape but ironically better than this one) so i don't feel too strongly about it but still, it's the one i've been wearing for the past 10 years.

I will probably get something in the same style, although I might go with calf leather instead of more exotic ones (this one is aligator, original was cayman, both from Cartier). I will take recommendations if anyone has some.

If you wore that watch everyday and got 10 years from that strap, that's actually pretty good. It's possible that if you had put some sapphire reptile conditioning cream you might the strap might look to be in a little better condition, but still 10 years is impressive for a daily wearer. Wearing leather straps or exotic straps in the summer when it's hot & humid shortens the life of most straps because sweat from your wrist dries out and damages skin (be it calf, alligator, ostrich etc).

You could do a tan or brown calf either smooth or textured with contrasting stitching for a more casual look, or choose a different exotic skin like lizard or ostrich. Personally, I like alligator more than calf, and simply choosing a different color would change the look of your watch. Wishing you luck with whatever you decide.

I also prefer with this type of Watch an exotic skin, and like Dino said I would take something in the same (original strap) style but would change the color. That’s what I did with this watch that also comes from family. When I had it, the strap (from the maker) was black, and I changed for exactly the same (crocodile) but in brown, and it did change the look indeed.

Do any of you have regrets about getting into watch collecting? I often think I should have bought a Rolex Sub and be done rather than have a lot of money tied up in watches, many of which I haven't worn in months.
I do. I have regrets. I have all of the regrets. Sometimes I think of how much I've pissed away on watches and it makes me sick. Then again, I am sick - a sick pig. So, I enjoy my flaws.

How much room is there to negotiate with a grey market dealer (EWC for example)? Looking to make a trade for a Patek or Lange and want to know what is the right discount to look for. Assume the watch is in the $55k-$70k range. Thanks.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
