For the brutal winters in Montreal I have two Woolrich John Rich bros parkas that I’ve been wearing strong for almost a decade. Both have exteriors that are made with Loro piana storm system wool fabrics and are highly weather resistant. Sadly Woolrich discontinued this line a while back. I have an eBay alert for them because I find them to be fantastic. Highly recommend if you can get your hands on one.
I second the recommendation for one of those Woolrich John Rich Bros/Loro Piana parkas if you can find one. I've had one since probably 2016 or so and it's great in very cold weather. The wool exterior makes it feel significantly smarter than your typical parka. I also sometimes wear a Ten C Arctic Down Parka in black, which has a lot of nice details. It's shorter and much more casual than the Woolrich.

For dressier occasions, I have the new Lovat Keeper's Tweed raglan from Drake's, which is surprisingly warm and fits over everything. I've worn it a lot this season and am really enjoying it.

Finally, I've had my eye on a Nigel Cabourn Everest Parka for a while, too, but so far haven't pulled the trigger. I'd like to get an olive one, but they sell out super fast every year and I always seem to miss it.

PSA: I asked a staff member in NYC what happened to the casentino fleeces and was told that the cloth manufacturer is having landlord issues, so no idea if/when those fleeces may come back…
Oh, that's too bad. I love the heritage of the cloth, really enjoy my orange half zip and would be interested in a navy full zip.

Edit: It looks like the mill was bought by a larger company that seems great (sustainable, owners' style looks like Drakes):

The bleach wash chore coat - compliments from women in their 20s to men in their 70s. My boss asked where he could get one.

The Denim Chores are awesome, I regret selling mine tbh… May need to get one in the near future.

Mine could be the either Woor or Rain Raglan Coat and the Patchwork Boucle Fleece Vest.

I agree.

It's worth noting that there are three versions(!) of the fleeces - the old/original versions, which come up slightly smaller and shorter in the arms. These can be identified by the fact that the cuffs have a very tightly elasticated cuff (typically in a contrasting strip of material) and the body zip has only one slider. They also used to be sized 36, 38, 40 etc as opposed to S, M and L. Although some of the older versions are still S, M and L. So, best to check the cuffs and the zipper.

The buffalo check, ecru, green, navy and blue fleeces in the archive sale are all this version.

The second version is roomier in the comparable size, longer in the arms, has a much less tightly elasticated cuff (with no contrasting strip of material).

I'd say go TTS but be aware that the newer version is slouchier. But that's how they're meant to be. As @nachobarro says, if you go smaller then the fleece will look too short.

The ecru and red, ecru and blue and ecru and brown fleeces in the archive sale are all the second version.

The third version retains all of the qualities of the second, they've just added a zip with two sliders.

The fleeces are amazing. They're amongst my favourite pieces - they're so versatile.

From the measurements, a 42 and an XL look comparable. The 42 is slightly smaller but should fit ok if you're typically a 42.

I'm a 38 so it's difficult for me to tell! I'm a medium in the new fleece and for some reason, I sized down on my first fleece to a 36. I shouldn't have done. I should've gotten the 38. So, the best advice I can give from my own experience is not to size down!

I really hope that this helps.
Hi, I was checking old posts regarding to zip fleece jackets and I reached to this post (almost one year ago).
I really appreciate your info.

Particularly I'm keen on the third version (this one https://www.drakes.com/products/ecru-red-and-blue-boucle-wool-zip-fleece-jacket) because to my taste the zip with 2 sliders makes it more wearable and interesting.

I'm analizing the size and I think it's a little bit tricky.

My background reagrds Drake's sizing is I recenty pulled the trigger for A2 Suede Bomber on size 40. My real size is somewhere between Drake's 38 and 40 sizes (in the A2 Suede Bomber, perhaps shoulder-to-shoulder measurement is 1,5 cms bigger than my perfect fit and chest measurement is 1,5 cm bigger than my perfect fit. All of this is OK once I wear and alpaca jersey below my A2 suede bomber).

Coming back to the fleece sizing issue, I'm checking 38 and 40 measurements:

The point is it seems to me size 40 is bigger than I was expecting. I have another similar zip fleece jacket (other brand) that fits me quite well (wearing and alpaca jersey below it) and chest size is 57cms (equal to Drake's size 38), shoulder-to-shoulder size is 47 (smaller than Drale's size 38) and back lenght size is 61cms (a little bir shorter than Drake's 38 size). The back lenght is not a problem for me, I'm 170cms tall.

In general I see that it's much smaller than Drake's 40 size.

Due to this research, I was really convinced to pull the trigger on a 38 size but I have many doubts once I read your post.

So I'm afraid 38 size could be pretty tight because of your experience but 40 size could be really roomy to my body (based on comparision with my current fleece jacket from another brand).

Many doubts.

Hi there.

It is online available to email subscribers so if you subscribe it will work. You may do so at the base on the home page, if the pop up does not appear, but also at checkout make sure the box is ticked for update.

Can drop us a message on our live chat as well.

Greetings all.
I bought the reassuringly expensive Harris Tweed herringbone jacket on an impulse yesterday, as the cloth really spoke to me, and the lapels looked a bit 'tamer' than other recent Drake's tweed jackets... and it is great....except the sleeve length is too short for me, and annoyingly Drake's finish them in the factory (i'm not sure why they do this at this level? surely they should come unfinished for weirdos like me?)
To make things trickier still, given they positioned the first button a full 2" from the cuff, it looks like too much of a gap as it is (shouldn't it be more like 1.25-1.5"?), so i can't be lengthening it from that end. Do members know if Drake's jackets leave inseam in the arm at the shoulder, so that i can let it out at the other end? I think i need circa inch, per photos below.
I really hope they do, else i feel this just isn't going to work for me, which would be a mighty shame...!
Many thanks, as always.

That’s a nice jacket! Congrats. Did you try on a bigger size as well? Imho you can just about pull it off, as it is. But if you want to lengthen the sleeves, you can check for extra fabric yourself on the inside of the armhole.

I just had a rummage around and there is very, very little. Such a shame!
I tried the size up but it was far too bulky everywhere else. This size was great....except for the sleeves.

Ah that’s too bad. But it seems you bought it in the physical shop? If so, I’d just call them or go back. Maybe they can do something for you, they are often quite helpful. Maybe they can do an made to order or something.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
