I disagree. I think it works quite well. One mf my favorite socks to wear with Black Tie (though I'm sure many will disagree) is a dark brown with with a subtle white stripe. I think the brown abalone effect works very well.

For example, I think black shoes work very well with chocolate brown suits.
I sometimes wear crimson studs and links with black tie, with no undesireable side effects. Brownish abalone hardware poses no risk if you like the way it looks.

Does anyone have any pictures of a U-shaped waistcoat they really like? I'm leaning towards DB, but I'm open to SB, too. I'm also thinking no lapels, but could pretty easily be convinced by a good picture of a shawl lapelled one.
Thanks in advance!

not necessarily a U shape and it does have a lapel, but I really like this Crompton vest done by Richard Anderson:

From the Steed website. This is the bespoke vest that they made for VoxSartoria. It was based on old photos of (I believe) Fred Astaire. Hard to see here but is DB and has lapels. I had them make me one. I can take photos of mine later.

I have 2 u shaped waistcoats cut in both single and double breasted for a tailcoat. Should receive them on Friday. Will post pics then.

Thanks for this. I'm going to file this under "genuinely interesting but not for me". I find the lapel configuration there especially interesting.

Here is a pic of my Steed vest. 4x2 DB with self-faced shawl lapels.

Color me intrigued! That's very helpful and also interesting in the 4x2 configuration: most of the ones I've seen are 6x3. I also think that the lapels on that shape/design are necessary....seems like it would look odd without them.

I have a bit of a waistcoat conundrum. I can't afford bespoke, so I went OTR with a Spier tux. It does the job, except that I'd like to opt into a waistcoat instead of a cummerbund. Of course, though, Spier doesn't make the matching waistcoat, so I'm forced to roll the dice with an 'odd' one and hope I get the materials to match as closely as I can.

Is there a solution to this that isn't 1. stick with my cummerbund (which is my backup plan) or 2. sToP bEiNg pOoR and going bespoke? Are options like this all-silk waistcoat from Budd worse than a close-but-not-precise matching wool one?

Related: if the answer really is to stay with a cummerbund, can anyone recommend a 'taller' one (not waist circumference, but taller vertically?
