IDK to be honest.

The finishing processes are proprietary for every maker and they are not willing to reveal their secrets.

So, it remains a bit of a mystery.

I don't think there is a mystery. They order leather and make shoes out of them. They may do so dieing but I'm guessing that's all.

Yeah Ron told me himself it was Horween.

Check out Ashland Leather for some more examples of grain shell (they sometimes have wallets).

Will do. And thanks again for a smooth transaction and a great pair of boots!!!!!

how do you like the fit? i agree about them elongated but you wear them well. do you have a link for the acrylic you use? they do have a wonderful alden-esque glow to them.

Right. But, we don't know what the various makers are doing to the shells post tannery.

That was what Skip strongly insinuated when I spoke with him about this matter.

Some makers paste a fabric/canvas backing between the shell and the lining. I'm not implying it's a terrible thing to do, but thicker uppers dont necessarily equate to thicker shell being used

Furthermore, even the thickness of the lining can be different so the final result for the thickness of any upper depends on those 3 aspects; lining, backing reinforcements and leather.

I get the same size as F last. Indeed they are quite roomy in toebox but i wont recommend further downsize.
You may search Angelus acrylic finisher on ebay. Below is what i got.

I'm not sure why, but I do notice that the uppers on my AE shell shoes do feel noticeably thinner than Carmina or Alden. Perhaps it is the thickness of the lining.
