^ I'm with you on that. I grew up in Scotland, and my parents bought all Scandinavian teak for their living and dining rooms. Not laminate: solid, beautiful, thick teak with curved edges: the kind of stuff that wouldn't last a week here on CL or on consignment.

When mom died a couple years back, no-one would even take it, not even the local auction house, so it went out "free to pick up". Absolutely worthless and unappreciated over there, while here it would have fetched thousands (aka about the same as it would have cost to have it shipped over for the arbitrage).

There's a guy (I forget his name), out of NJ, I think, who spends a good chunk of the year picking up Scandinavian MCM for short money all over Europe and sending it over here by the container load to flip to wealthy New Yorkers. Oh, here he is (gift link): https://www.nytimes.com/2023/06/25/...e_code=1.Ik4.7Pwy.ko7zlBfWw-cp&smid=url-share
Thank you for the link - this is so true. I was down on the south coast (of England) a few weeks ago and saw a teak MCM bookshelf in a thrift store for £10. Even taking it to London would have generated a decent margin, but only if you had the ability to transport it and store it until you find a buyer…

That's so funny. I live about 2 blocks away from this guys store in NJ. Always fun to stop by and browse. He recently moved his operation to Brooklyn to be closer to the rich new Yorkers.

Thread first? Martin Logan speakers, initial research is pretty exciting with original retail price of $1,500 in 2007.

a lot of my friends get most of their inventory buying containers out of europe. some have a connect, some go and source it themselves. lots of crazy stories.

Not a thread first, but price wise, you did way better than me.
Post in thread 'The Official Thrift / Discount Store Bragging Thread Part III (Sept 201:cool:' https://www.styleforum.net/threads/...hread-part-iii-sept-2018.637155/post-10425336

I also picked up a pair several years ago. didn’t like em more than the magnepans I had picked up before that so off they went.

“wpb area” is urban sprawl, too vague to give any specific suggestions if you’re on a time crunch. if traffic is bad it could take you an hour+ to get from royal palm to the east side, wpb proper—even longer if trump fancies a trip into town and the secret service closes southern blvd from the airport to the island.

but it doesn’t really matter. there are a billion new pickers out here now, and rack vultures sitting at every store waiting to pounce. every store has the potential to be good if your timing is right. just pick an area close to you where you can hit the most shops, cross your fingers, go in w zero expectation, and hope to be pleasantly surprised.

Was digging out from last weekend and found more stuff this weekend. Gonna have to group my posts by category. First up, vintage military.

IMG_3736.jpeg

M-1951 parka with liner dated… 1951. Needs a good soak.

IMG_3738.jpeg

5 vintage US Navy chambray shirts from the 60s-70s.

IMG_3737.jpeg

N4 deck jacket. Has some fraying, but I rarely find these.
IMG_3739.jpeg

4 pairs of US Navy denim pants from the 70s. Amazing condition.

All N/A unless you make me an offer I can’t refuse. 🤔 More later this weekend.

Picked up this beauty for two Jackson’s, probably going to keep it for personal use; it’s in decent shape but could definitely use a freshening up.

@impuntura @tonylamerCJC any recommendations for sprucing up MCM Teak?

Nice score. If I'm not going to strip and re-finish something, I do one of 3 things:

1) Just use a rag, some elbow grease, and furniture oil or polish. If you focus on the spots where the finish has rubbed off, you can bring back the colour. Probably the best option for a beginner because you don't risk ruining your find.

2) Use very fine steel wool (it has to be the 0000 wool for finishing, otherwise you'll scratch the hell out of the piece) and an oil-based wax like Howard Feed-N-Wax. I wouldn't recommend this for your first try, but it can work very well, especially if the finish has surface marks from moisture or storage.

3) Use a high-grit sandpaper (1000 grit wet/dry sandpaper+ to lightly scuff the existing finish). Then apply a very, very thin coat of oil with a rag. This isn't easy to figure out, but it can give you really good results.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
