Thank you for the link - this is so true. I was down on the south coast (of England) a few weeks ago and saw a teak MCM bookshelf in a thrift store for £10. Even taking it to London would have generated a decent margin, but only if you had the ability to transport it and store it until you find a buyer…^ I'm with you on that. I grew up in Scotland, and my parents bought all Scandinavian teak for their living and dining rooms. Not laminate: solid, beautiful, thick teak with curved edges: the kind of stuff that wouldn't last a week here on CL or on consignment.
When mom died a couple years back, no-one would even take it, not even the local auction house, so it went out "free to pick up". Absolutely worthless and unappreciated over there, while here it would have fetched thousands (aka about the same as it would have cost to have it shipped over for the arbitrage).
There's a guy (I forget his name), out of NJ, I think, who spends a good chunk of the year picking up Scandinavian MCM for short money all over Europe and sending it over here by the container load to flip to wealthy New Yorkers. Oh, here he is (gift link): https://www.nytimes.com/2023/06/25/...e_code=1.Ik4.7Pwy.ko7zlBfWw-cp&smid=url-share
