Gun club checks with light, cream or white grounds contrast with the darker tones in the pattern and are harder to wear. I avoid them.
Bold patterns with low contrast of color are easier to wear.

I did subscribe to the LL Perfect Spring Jacket cloth run which, in real life, has less contrast and cooler tones, than the photos on the site, only to find that I already have a similar check made up. Guess that explains why I liked the LL cloth to begin with.

I have on the shelf a shepherd check-like sport coat length with an orange overcheck - it is more of an ecru/black versus optic white/black. I will probably have it made up at some point - I don't see it hard to wear at all. Some of those other fabrics are too warm-toned orange to red for me

I prefer the second one but better than the previous examples shown.

The same jacket, I think. I assume it's an Italian fabric?

A friend recently pointed out to me that Italian "gun clubs" have more of a gingham type pattern

Whereas the traditional British version tends to be toothier

You can see this in the photos above, where the edges sometimes look like houndstooth.

Derek, is the top photo you posted, the Loro Piana CoarseHair jacket from The Armoury? That is a gun club check I really like, cooler temperature colours with lower contrast between the ground colour and the checks, than any of the others posted so far.
I would choose that in a heartbeat over (Vox's LL?) jacket in the second photo and it has nothing to do with gingham versus houndstooth checks.

Yes, from The Armoury. I think the jacket goes well with blue oxford shirts, taupe or tan pants, and brown casual-ish shoes
