If you want to try a different take on a Gose, Off Color Troublesome is your best bet...

I actually just brought a bottle of that to Spain to share with the owner of a beer bar. It was alright, but I can't say either of us were disappointed to finish it...

Some new beers at the supermarket. 6.5% IPA, 6% Lambic kriek, 6.66% DIPA.

I just met the brewers from Brussels Beer Project. Nice guys, but they gave their whole presentation in French, which I don't speak, so I could barely understand what was said. Apparently the Dark Sister and Delta are the same recipe, basically a saison/IPA cross, except that the Dark sister has two more kinds of malt which gives it the dark color. They had both beers on tap, but I think they were a little underfermented, as they both tasted like diacetyl. I got some bottles though which I'll probably try soon.

As for me, I just bought those. Apparently Garrett Oliver literally brought them to Europe in his suitcase. One is called Purple Sorachi, the Ghost Bottle is a Flanders Red, and the other is a barrel aged sour porter that nobody could even tell me the name of. I emailed Brooklyn Brewery to try to get a little more information, so I'll see what they say. I'm excited, I don't think those have ever been for sale anywhere.

I live near the source and get fresh bottles all the time, I can say there has been a batch variance from time to time, but it's definitely a great summer beer. Their berliner is even better, toss Scurry in and you have my wife's 3 current favorites.

If you wanted to convince somebody of the greatness of sour beers, what 3-4 beers would you give them first? I realize that's a pretty broad question. Would ideally be beers that are not TOO difficult to come across. TIA.

I'd suggest:

Bockor Jacobins Rouge
Anderson Valley Gose
Petrus Aged Pale
Any local berliner weisse

Pretty readily available, not too expensive and you get a good range of flavor profiles.

I would stay away from Lambics or Guezes for a newcomer to sour beers. The funk can be a bit much.

Looking forward to other suggestions.

Really depends where you live/what you have access to. Goose Island sours are relatively accessible. West Coast - Russian River has good introductory sours. Rodenbach is available everywhere and along with aforementioned Bockor Cuvee Jacobins Rouge are great Flemish Reds. Monks Cafe as well, to a lesser extent. Other American introductory sours off the top of my head include Jolly Pumpkin, particularly Roja, Crooked Stave, Hill Farmstead's saisons are often tart.

Good luck!

I find Duchess de Bourgogne is a good starter. If people are new to sours it is barely recognizable as beer.

^ Thanks all. Really appreciate it. The question is just as much for me as for my friends. I discovered sours not all that long ago and am quickly becoming obsessed, especially as the warmer weather comes in. Have a Cascade Figaro and an Almanac Dogpatch sitting in the fridge waiting for the right moments. Absolutely love Gose. Not sure I am going to convince anyone else I know to drink these though - definitely not for everyone.

What's the best Gose in cans in the US, and who wants to swap some?.. :)

Westbrook gose is my top 2 findable beer of all time. Been thinking about ordering a case of that and blushing monk online.

I had upright gose today and it was just fantastic. Might not have to brew gose at home. Been surviving on anderson valley gose and it just doesn't hit the spot for me. The sour is rather unbalanced and the lager taste is too prominent. Has that odd metallicness about it I find in goses

My small town got pliny the younger for St Patrick's day and I totally didn't know until today cuz Im not on Facebook. They still have elder and supplication

Been realizing elder isn't really my style. Too much malt and bitter. I prefer IPAs with a **** ton of hops at the dry hop stage. Supplication tho. That is a damn fine beer.

Oh and I asked everybody about peche and brett and it's been gone for a month. I'll keep an eye out next year for the release

Good to know about Upright. I'll have to seek that out. Was the younger at Suds & Suds? Got some punchcards from there.

Went to NoDa Brewing in Charlotte with some friends yesterday.

Their Hop Drop N Roll was a really solid DIPA. Also had a very berry stout. 9.4% with nice raspberry notes. Pretty impressed with both. Friend did a sampler and pretty much everything he had was solid.

Added to pickups from the other day. Apparently the purple wax is Purple Sorachi, which is Sorachi Ace aged in red wine barrels over blueberries. The green wax is BBA Wild Horse, the ghost bottle is Local Two aged on cider lees, and the Hand and Seal is finished in Cognac barrels. I'm super excited to try the Purple Sorachi especially, and a friend said he tried the Hand and Seal and thought it was incredible.
