It really is a nice shoe. I like exposed eyes on my casual/biz-casual shoes so generally I ship them off to Aram before I even wear them. Saved a hundred or so on that and I really like the six eyes. I can definitely see the Black being pretty cool as well. Heel fit is similar to TB but the toe area actually feels a little more roomy than TB (never thought I’d say that) but it could be apples to oranges with the difference in size. Bottom line is I do think TTS is best but with thin socks, probably could have squeezed into Barrie.

Ha. I crease my shoes by looking at them. It won’t take much. Thanks.

Finally legit boot weather in the Burg. Loving the wings. Outdoor, indoor, and well, you know…….

Sigh. So I’ve owned various pairs of Alden’s over the past five-ish years. Two of them fit me well (Barrie derbies in my Brannoch) and a pair of single monks on Aberdeen (in wide).

I’d not been able to get boots to fit right so last time I visited NYC I dropped by Alden Madison. Barrie just doesn’t want to work for me. I found a Trubalance size that fits great. But guess what- non-traditional size. (7.5E)

Anyone know of any retailers doing pre-orders on Trubalance boots in plain toe or cap toe? Fairly open on leather.

Have you purchased from blue owl before? They’ve got a black pair that I’m interested in. This would be first Selvedge pair of jeans.

All the time. I have a couple places that I typically purchase from but Blue Owl has been my go to. Very nice selection and CS is great. They will hem for free if you purchase from them.

I have fallen in deep like with slevedge (not the level of love I have with Alden) and I will make two cautions. First, Blue Owl doesn’t do cash returns, only store credit. Which leads to my second item, fit. As with footwear, fit is everything and I had as much of a challenge nailing my fit with selvedge as I did with Alden’s. Without getting into the weeds, it was far more challenging than I ever imagined. The days of grabbing a 33 or 34 off the rack from Macy’s are a distant memory.

I had never heard of selvedge before a couple of years ago from being on this site. Like footwear, not convinced that it is worth the price but it has become a guilty pleasure that I treat myself to.

Good luck!

Seems like I used these in bad weather too often. Only have them since 1 year and I didn’t think about the sole not being ideal for wet ground. These are also my first Alden’s.

I want to keep using them in wet conditions so I need to replace the sole with something like a commando sole!?

I wish they made more plain toe and cap toe styles on trubalance. That’s the kind of rare Alden I wish I could buy…
I'm honestly not sure why this isn't as common as well. Back in covid times I was lucky to get AoM to make a cap-toe boot on TB. I'm kind of baffled at some of the special make ups that get made by the various retailers, but something as simple like a plain or cap toe on a different last is so rare. I wish there were more options to do group MTOs, but given how backed up Alden is with regularly inventory it seems like its not something thats feasible anymore.

Brogue sometime runs plain toed boots in less common lasts like 379X and TB. Leffot has their plain toe villager boot on TB, offered (and reordered) in snuff suede and color 8.

Cap toes in TB do seem even less common.

Wow, that looks really bad after only a year. I love boots that are worn like boots and would love to see a picture of the uppers. I don’t have a ton of experience with Alden crepe but in my limited experience I have not seen such a deterioration in so short a period of time. I think commando would wear better than that but there are similar complaints on this thread about those soles as well.

Tough call my-man. Sorry I couldn’t be a tad more helpful.

Adam (Alden of Carmel) was really good in this regard. I had both a plain toe and perf cap in C8 on TB from him. Sadly, had is the operative word……

Thanks Shawn - I had a pair queued up when I noticed the size was different from actual waist size. So I need to do more research. I'm hesitant now after doing a bit of research. I love jeans from Mott and Bow, they have worked really well for me. My teaching uniform is jeans, loafers or wingtips, and Untuckit long sleeve button shirts (I buy them new on eBay at a huge discount - $25 a GREAT deal)...but I would like to stick my toe in the Selvedge water - but hate returning things I'm going to look for brick & mortar in my area that has a pair I can try on. Always grateful for your insight!

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
