Good points @Stingy Brim and that it what I try to do. I like your suit - it will look even better when the trousers are shortened.

Personally, I only button the top one on a two-button jacket, which I think gives a more elegant look.

Let's see some pictures of your suits, gents.

Thanks Mr K, yes only the top button done up would be more elegant, I was just wondering how it would look with a white shirt and almost red tie peaking out at the bottom. I don't mind either but on a three button jacket all done up looks like a straight jacket most of the time...

Yes, I know what you mean about the shirt and tie peaking out. It is a difficult one - solved to some extent by going for a higher rise trouser perhaps?

Trousers definitely need to be worn higher. The top button and the waistband should be fairly close to each other so the bottom button can lie open showing just trouser.

Haha, just realised there is no blue. Well whatever that twill pattern is doing to disrupt the check
There's a very dark blue / grey line running across:

Anyway thanks for the votes guys and second place was more than I expected

I'm fancying a red monkey jacket for the coming summer. I realise I'm going to have to put up with piping. Any recommendations?

Red is complicated MoM, not many options… Google 'Monkey jacket red' and you'll see… Maybe the David Watts but i don't like the piping much.

Now if i wanted to buy a Monkey jacket, it wouldn't be red and i would most probably buy a Fred Perry one from the 'reissue' collection. With a little luck maybe there are some in the sales.

If i remember well, Mr Knightley bought one a long time ago from Ben Nevis… Quite cheap and sturdy, but not in red...

Mine is more a winter weight jacket with a quilted lining. Very warm but rather short in the body so not that wearable really. Factor in the striped cuffs and collar and it gets little use. It was cheap and it is sturdy...

Mine is dark navy with white.

Was red ever a colour back in the day? I had a red M&S botany wool v neck but that was it I think.

Funnily enough I was thinking about buying a red v neck; currently I own nothing in that colour.
In the past I've owned a scarlet vintage bowling shirt from American Classics, a dark red duffel coat, and a few other bits and bobs, none of which could really considered part of ' the look'.
I also quite like red linen shirts- go well with a suntan.
Ps I think I'm right in saying that red dress shirts,, along with blues and greens, were sometimes worn with dinner suits on black tie events in the 70s- think of that show The Comedians, with the likes of Bernard Manning and Mike Ter-riif-ic Read and co....

Oh, I'd forgotten that and I think you are right.

Obviously red socks came and went as well as red laces on dessies and Hush Puppies in the Mod era. Red pocket hankies were also popular - but I don't really remember it as a colour for major pieces of clothing.

Late 70s, red Fred Perry shirts and red Harringtons were popular items of the skinhead look (but not worn at the same time).

And red sleeveless jumper too (if i remember well).

The first Fred Perry shirt i had was red, 3b, with a white Laurel.
