I call bs. When they replaced the spring and track and everything here, it was two guys (like the sith it was master and apprentice) for ~3 hours.

Um. Yeah, I did t so any of that ... I just installed the opener.

So remove through old garage door open (easy to disconnect and remove) and then install the new one....not particulatly long time

Insinkerator Badger 5 pooped out for some reason. I think it's just old. The disposal hums when powered but then starts smoking. Reached in and couldn't really find anything stuck. Left it unplugged and will give it this weekend to try the manual maneuver. Otherwise, I imagine this is needing replacement.

It's odd because I just don't recall using it a whole lot in the last 3 years since moving in. So, I think it's just age from previous homeowner.

Was searching this thread because I recall there was a discussion about garbage food disposal before. I see some people don't even use one or prefer not to or the building is not to code? On one hand I am inclined to just leave it as is. On the other hand, I don't want to leave loose ends and want to learn how to fix this or new install (looks pretty straightforward per videos online).

The dishwasher seems fine and as far as I can tell, and will continue flowing through the food disposal regardless if the disposal is functioning or not. No leaks right now.

doesn't sound like a great idea to let the sink backup into the dishwasher as a filter for your drain . are you going to fix the ******* insinkerator ? replace it or do whatever but i'd deal with it fast and i'm the kind of guy who worries about the dishwasher too which is why i got rid of ours

i'll edit to add this is simply my ignorant opinion and take with all due disclaimer but i'd deal with it

As far as DIY plumbing goes, disposal swap is about as easy as it gets. We went with the compact and quiet (yet powerful) Insinkerator model. Super easy and saves on both the marked up unit and egregious labor that a plumber co. would have to charge.

Insinkerator swaps are easy because there is a quick swap mount that stays attached to the sink. I recall you just unplug, twist it in the bracket, then it comes out. I swapped one way back in 2014 from a non-Insinkerator and it was easy. Badger 5s are pretty cheap and paying more just makes it quieter.

I swapped one way back in 2014 from a non-Insinkerator and it was easy. Badger 5s are pretty cheap and paying more just makes it quieter.

Might as well change that ring anyhow while in there, it just takes a little plumbers putty to set the new one. Easy peasy.

They'er really impactful on sewage treatment facilities, put too much of a solids load on marginal drainage systems and are just all around troublesome mechanical devices prone to misuse. Dump a bunch of artichoke leaves in one and you might as well just **** can the thing.

Eh, they can recommend against it and maybe your plumbing does marginally better over time...

Or you can live with the convenience of a disposal for your entire life.

You don't want to overuse the thing, but as long as you run plenty of water and don't put bad things down it, it will be fine. Plenty of plumbers have them in their own homes because they make life easier every single day.
