I've just received an email inviting me to be part of the Times Higher Education 2023 survey. Is this legit or a scam? I'm not bothered about filling it in as my current institution isn't my alma mater and isn't really in my good books LOL

I don't think the THE ratings are a scam in the sense of it being fraudulent or somehow criminal. I know that my own institution is more than happy to report our world ranking when it comes out every year. But I do think that all of these ratings (THE, QS, USNWR in the US, etc) are all ridiculous. It's just a beauty contest at the end of the day. It's not unlike the suit quality rankings floating around StyleForum.

Ratings are there to be manipulated. However I was actually wondering if this invitation to be part of the survey is legit. Presumably I'd be commenting on my current institution and possibly contributing to its rating next year. Anyone else received such an invitation?

don't recall that I got a THE invite this year but have received others in the past. Generally they don't want you to review your own institution -- rather they usually want you to rate the reputations of other institutions. They have the hard data on your own institution (faculty:student ratio, etc) and then mix in "reputation" from others at peer institutions.
