Dear fellow gentlemen,

I've been curating a directory of some 500 high-quality brands:

Brands are listed by year of foundation, region of origin, and category.

This directory will be regularly updated in the future. This is a work in progress, comments are welcome.

Notes:

• [made in XX] indicates that part of the production has been delocalised but that some items are still manufactured in the country of origin,
• [vintage] indicates that the quality has declined over time, but that products were of good quality in the past and should be sought after on the second-hand market,
• the column "private label/holding" gives the names of brands that are selling products from the manufacture under another name, and if the manufacture now belongs to a luxury house.

I do have a couple of questions which are:

Where did you source the info/rankings from? From collections of threads and other rankings?

Are the brands and their ratings averaged out?

Some of the notes are just letters, is this to tell us the grade they have?

The list is a compilation of information found on specialised blogs and forums.

The column B corresponds to the year of founding.

Some categories have broad rankings (A, B, C). The sources are sartorialisme.com for shoemakers, SF user Johnny80 via the 'Cashmere Sweater Hierarchy thread' for cashmere manufacturers, Federico Iossa via the Gentleman's Gazette for watchmakers.

I have been keeping a similar one, excluding stationaries and beauty, and am happy to add things like Drumohr being owned by Gruppo Ciocca which also owns Sozzi Milano etc, just shoot me a DM if you want
