He did always have drug problems. Really depressing...he was one of those actors who I'd always try to go see the movie if he's in it.

Unfortunately it wasn't a total surprise. He was quite open about his battles with addiction. Probably the most talented actor of his generation, I wish we could have had more films from him, but what's really sad is that he has left three kids without a father.

Inside Llewyn Davis was really good. Definitely one of the better films of last year.

Maybe it's the case with half of the great films of last year, but it seems this one slipped waaaay under the radar. But I'd have to agree; it was a really good flick. The Oscars should be pretty interesting. I don't think there are any clear cut winners is any of the major(?) categories.

Just saw Monuments Men. An unfortunate case of very little storyline with an amazing cast. Bummer, it didn't even do it well like Oceans did.

ha, we were gonna go see that with my gf the other day but ended up seeing the Lego movie which was excellent.

Now need to go see Asghar Farhadi's The Past. I bought the blu-ray over Xmas but it's the first time my region-free player hasn't been able to play something!

The Past kinda falters midway through when Farhadi regrettably sidetracks from the main storyline/Ahmad to focus instead on the suicide attempt plot point. It's a shame because it completely changes the tone of the film (for the worst) and was totally unneeded. Still, Farhadi's direction of actors is always a pleasure to watch (and like in his previous stuff, he's brilliant at moving his characters through rooms/interiors with great fluidity) and the films is full of nice mise en scène ideas so it's not all bad.

Also I meant to ask Sip, what are your top 5 for 2013 that you enjoyed?

Can't do a top but here's a list, in no particular order

Like Father, Like Son (Hirokazu Koreeda)
Michael Kohlhaas (Arnaud des Pallières)
Mud (Jeff Nichols)
No (Pablo Larraín)
Stranger by the Lake (Alain Guiraudie)
Museum Hours (Jem Cohen)
All Is Lost (J.C. Chandor)
Before Midnight (Richard Linklater)
Nobody´s Daughter Haewon (Hong Sang-soo)

Also, I was prepared to thoroughly hate Frances Ha but ended up enjoying it.

And lots of stuff I need to catch up on

Need to watch asap : The Immigrant, Snowpiercer, Double Play: James Benning and Richard Linklater, Inside Llewyn Davis, Stories We Tell, Jimmy P.

Need to watch eventually : 12 Years a Slave, Gravity, Drug War, The Wind Rises, At Berkeley

Hmm, I heard Frances Ha was maybe too over-inspired by Bujalski's Funny Ha Ha, above. May this be your trump card in the game of hipster olympics, where the stakes, like the players, are often high....

I am also not ashamed to admit that having failed several times to see the original (due to poor DVD/download quality) the Oldboy remake held my interest all the way through.

Also, Primer may not have been the best choice for Valentine's Day and subsequently I am cold and alone. :(

Visible Pick Stitching on Lapels and Pockets

  • It’s a mark of quality and craftsmanship
