This is the best thread I've seen in days. Thank you.

Had this happen once. I have no idea how I wasn't stung. That said, I may have rather it been a bat...

Odd that the bat turned up in your loafer. I didn't think they like to get on the ground at all. Despite their being occasional vectors of rabies, I like bats. They add a touch of magic and mystery to the night, and they do wonderful work controlling insects. They don't seem to be common in my neck of the woods. In 13 years of walking my dogs by night, I don't recall ever having glimpsed a bat--I have seen raccoons, foxes, coyotes, skunks, opossums and any number of birds, but no bats, sadly.

I once was talking to a farmer about such things. He told me, too graphically, about the day he pitched a load of hay into a cart - a snake fell out of the hay - and down through his open collar - into his shirt where it proceeded to writhe. Is still remember his summation: "I damn near died."

Did the farmer tell you what kind of snake it was? Not a venomous one, I hope for his sake?

I once came home from school and found a bat writhing on my driveway. I went inside, got a hamper, put it over the bat, and called animal control. When my mother got home from work, I explained what happened. She said that was the first instance in her life when she thought I might actually be able some day to move out, live on my own, and make a living. It was obviously a very good moment for her.
