Curious if folks ask their tailors to accommodate for knitwear when making winter commissions or if it’s ever brought up by the tailor, specifically English tailors?

If that’s how you intend to wear it, I don’t see why you wouldn’t bring it up. I wouldn’t assume that my cutter would expect that I would be wearing a sweater under my jacket unless I brought one with me to a fitting. I imagine the cynical side of me would think he would find ample excuse to sell me a commission of an overcoat (and it wouldn’t take much to sell me on it)

Fair point. I doubt many people would wear their winter-weight bespoke jackets exclusively with thick knitwear. However, let's say someone did specify that they want to wear a sweater. Then, when they opt to wear a shirt, the jacket would likely fit bigger than intended. That's why I'm bringing it up, primarily. Curious about any related experiences out there.

If you are commissioning a tweed jacket, you may well get a question about that.

I actually asked exactly that question for my last commission, though italian tailor. It was a tweed jacket commission. I am quite happy with the result. Room for a sweater without feeling too tight, without a sweater it is still so shaped that no one would question it, and very comfortable.

That's inevitable. There will always be some compromise when it comes to how your jacket fits. However, you can achieve a good result with and without a sweater.

Has someone ordered trousers with this feature (belt made in the same cloth as the trousers)? Picture is from a suit from A&S:

A Gurkha belt, more or less? I'd feel more confident having that in summer weight. Even better, with the cheesy HK addition of non-skid inside the waist band.

I don’t think it’s a gurkha belt. It’s rather an independent standard belt made out of the same cloth as the trousers.

Curious. Haven't seen that in their shop, but that doesn't mean an enterprising client hasn't talked them into it.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
