this poll question makes little sense as pointed out above - I like to show a lot of cuff (maybe 1/2 to 3/4")

I ask my tailor make measurements before and after moving around when in the jacket, as I have found that the sleeves can easily get hung up during the course of the work day and look too short at times if the measurements are only taken in a stationary position. The first time he found it a little amusing when I did a couple jumping jacks but after I explained he tended to agree with me.

My alteration tailor measures 4.5 inches from the tip of the thumb when my arms are down (relaxed, not military attention).

How do other tailors do it?

mine just feels around. my shirts, coats and cuffs are all too soft to stay in one place, so I don't get crazy about them all being the same.

You must have a short thumb. 5" from my thumb would have me looking like I came from MW.

I hate such empty rules of thumb :). I also hate the rule that a jacket should be as long as your second knuckle.

It's not that I don't like rules in general; I just don't like bad rules. Obviously thumbs and hands and wrists come in different proportions so 4.5 or 5 inches up on one person is going to yield different results than for another. Also, something that is not often taken into account is the fact that sleeve cuffs fall down further on certain arms depending on the width of the wrist in proportion to the width of the hand. Thus, if you are trying to ensure a certain amount of cuff showing--which is ultimately what determines if a sleeve looks the right length--one should measure how long he wants his sleeve in relation to his cuff and leave it at that. Why divine a number from secondary measurements when you can get the correct measurement directly?

Personally, I like half an inch of cuff showing, but tastes differ on this issue.

Oh, and jacket should cover your ass. That's it. The more it goes below your ass the more you risk the jacket being long. The less it covers your ass, the more you risk the jacket being short. Choose how risky you want to be.

yeah, i don't get it. to me, the length of the jacket depends on the length of your legs/ torso. Myself, i have short legs so i buy my jackets just long enough to cover ******, and the length of the sleeves are entirely a different matter (cut to show 1/2" of cuff).

For me, this means wearing size 42short suits and jackets instead of 42regs. the actual difference in measurement from the bottom of the jacket collar is 30" for the short jacket, versus 30.5" from many brands-- or even 31" from brands like Kiton and some Oxxfords, i think. 31 inches is just too long for me!
