Erm... no, this is a miss. The pattern scale of tie and shirt is too close, and it's exacerbated by the matching tones. Honestly it looks like something a suburban supermarket manager would wear. (Sigh.. sometimes I just can't resist the snark, can I)

.
Yachtie's example is spot-on. I actually love the narrow range of tone because the pattern scales hold it all together.

I rarely wear stripes on stripes. May have to do some experimenting in the next few weeks and post my results.

That photo of Whodini is a good example of Whodidn't

On the other hand Yachtie's combination works fine.

So the answer is yes, it can be done.

HI everyone! I have an interview tomorrow and was wondering your expert thoughts on the combination below. Suit is black, since I have nothing else. The tie is actually more of a dark navy blue, but shows up more black/gray here.

And DEFINATELY pair it with a solid suit!
As long as the stripes are different in width, you can pair multiple striped patterns into one outfit. As far as the suit goes, you can certainly go with solids, but also nice are subtle window-pane checks, herringbone, and birds-eye pattern.

Hi,
Have same issue with striped tie and striped shirt. It seems fine for me, however want just to check that such combination is indeed good.
