What are the differences between hatch grain from Horween and J&FJ Russian calf?

Different tanning process, much different depth of color, and if I'm not mistaken the leathers are different as well. Horween is calf and there's been quite a bit of talk about what J&FJ is. The only thing I can confirm for sure is that J&FJ Russian Calf is almost or as durable as shell cordovan. Also, the smell. Horween hatch grain smells like leather. J&FJ smells special (I personally think it smells like bacon).

I always thought J&FJ Russian Calf is calf leather. If it were reindeer or whatever they would call it that.

If you go to the A&A crack website and look up leathers, you'll see that J&FJ doesn't fall under deer. It's normal cow/calf.

That is a great cheat method to use to arrive at that conclusion. 👌🏻

As @Texasmade mentioned though, it is indeed calf leather. However, it is a steer or ox (not sure what ages the UK stops designating them as calves). It could be 11 months (like in the US), or as much as 18 months (registration guidelines differ). I guess we'll say steer. Whatever the case may be, it is not a fully grown Ox but its size can be a source of confusion.

As for why it could be under the "cow" listing category, bullhide is also called cowhide shoulder leather.

Bullshide has high tensile strength so it gives you that tough thicker fiber, yet because it is from younger animals it will be softer and more pliable. Which is why you get that shell resemblance.

I'm torn between Edward Green and St. Crispin. Looking at black with some grain for work; like the Dover in Utah. I do have an unlined Dover that I love, but will probably go StC as I have a personalized last that is insanely comfortable.
