Does anyone have experience with the knit polo's sizing?

6'1 172lb, trying to decide between a medium and a large. Usually take a 40R in jackets, but like a slim fit on polos.

You're close to my size, and I like a slim fit as well.
I'm a tweener with them. I've mainly ordered mediums and they are perfect new. I wash cold and dry flat and there is just the slightest shrinkage that has me thinking I'll try a large next time to gauge the difference...

Hello all - has anyone reached out to @spiermackay @SpierTeam yet and received clarification regarding the “Extra Slim Fit” shirts? If not, would someone be so kind to ask Rick via insta and report back? I recently deleted my Instagram, otherwise would gladly do so.

This is quite distressing news. Part of me wonders if the naming conventions are simply changing….? Thanks kindly. Longtime lurker and SM customer here. Made an account just for this.
Can't find his Insta and the S&M insta has never replied to me. Messaged on FB

Got a reply from CS email. Some not-so-good news:

Hi _____,

Thank you for reaching out to us. We have phased out extra slim as an option for a variety of our off the rack shirts. I am personally not sure the exact reason as to why this decision was made, but we do phase out or introduce specific sizes/fits based on popularity and customer demand/sales. Extra slim is still available as an option through our Custom/MTO shirt program.

I hope this helps and please let me know if you have any other questions.

May not be able to do much shopping from S&M anymore

With the caveats that I’m going to set it on a different (better) hanger, actually take measurements (I’m usually not a fanatic about it unless things seem WAY off), and snap some on body photos for perspective, it seems my fear might have been confirmed that the Di Pray W/S SC was nottttttt exactly put through the most rigorous QC review…

I sent an IG message to Rick. I am hoping the CS agent is just guessing about this. A reduction in this fit is better than discontinuing the ESF altogether.

This seems like a misguided move. Every retailer in this price/quality bracket (CT, SuSu, etc.) was racing to develop a competitive “extra slim fit” within the last ~6 years. It is not as though the demographic that this was serving has disappeared. I too hope the CS rep is wrong.

Agree with you 100%.
At SM retail the purple label shirts are a good value.
If I have to go custom fit with SM I have faster options and much better stitching quality elsewhere.
Basic sewing thread tension, appropriate SFI, accurate pattern matching and shrinkage would need to be greatly improved for the price of custom from SM.

My response from CS on IG just now was that ESF was reduced but not discontinued. I asked for more purple label ESF options. Looks like there will be offerings for Fall 23 but probably not as many as the past seasons.

Thanks. Still disappointing to hear, but I would love some purple lapel options. I guess we now know that when esf is available, grab them fast.

Well…it’s not the worst news. I STRONGLY encourage @spiermackay @SpierTeam to, at minimum, continue to stock staples like the purple label Oxfords and others in the ESF.

Otherwise, it’s back to SuSu for me if ESF staples are not available OTR. I am immensely disappointed, however, as I recently converted to SM shirts (at the encouragement of Rick via my old insta, and others) and I was pleased to continue using them as my primary shirt retailer. Too bad.

What does ESF really mean though? Fit-wise, a lot of brands start with tents for obese burned out middle-aged white collar American men to wear to their miserable jobs, which pays for their dissatisfied wives and ungrateful kids, and then go smaller from there. Spier on the other hand starts from a slimmish template as is, so there might just not be anywhere for them to extra their way down to?

For one data point, I wear a 17.5 x35 "extra slim fit" (in quotes because I am hardly an extra slim guy) from Charles Tyrwhitt. The equivalent fit for me in SM is 17.5 x35 contemporary.

So maybe there just aren't enough heroin-chic guys in USA/CA in 2023 to support whatever SM considers/considered extra slim. An organization like SuSu I'd understand if they kept going given that they probably have more customers in those European countries with really high GDP per capita, months and months of paid vacations, and where guys take some variant of human-powered vehicle to work every day.

Happy to report that I received today a MTO pair of trews purchased on May 1. No complications whatsoever. Granted, my order was pretty simple: Minnis fresco, medium gray, high rise 33 contemporary, single pleats, unfinished bottoms with an inch more added to the standard length. Of note, the fabric I received seems a bit denser/heftier than previous iterations of Minnis fresco trews. I’m happy about this. Off to the tailor they go!

SM's 36S neo cut sportcoat fits me perfectly.
Does anyone here have a similar size with me? What's your shirt size in SM?
I have tried Slim, extra slim, 15 and 15.5. The cut just doesn't fit.
Maybe I should go for a larger size? But then the sleeve is too long.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
