Great encapsulation of Tom Ford scents above.

Today I'm wearing Dior Sauvage, which despite the slightly too hip ad campaign, is quite refreshing and does seem to give that slightly wild allure.

I've been wearing a sample of Comme des Garcons Black over the past three days and wonder why I've never bought a bottle. The combination of dry anise, incense, and birch tar is amazing.

Has anyone tried the Vilhelm Parfumerie line? I'm especially curious about their scent Purple Fig.

I sampled a handful at Barneys. I remember liking Purple Fig the SA said it was “too dirty” but I didn’t feel that way at all. Ive got a few mls of Dirty Velvet from that day which I don’t think I’ll finish. Made me feel overly self conscious. Morning Chess would be the most likely purchase for me from them but everything I sampled had quality. I think I’ll revisit the house I like the 18ml bottle size.

I don't mind synthetics, but sometimes depending on the notes and combination, they can feel a little sharp. On the other hand, purely natural perfumes can feel a bit muddled.

I talked to David Moltz, the perfumer at DS & Durga, about this once. He described synthetics as things that give a scent structure. That also made sense to me. Purely natural perfumes feel a bit flat and muddy, whereas synthetics feel like you're walking through a three dimensional structure. But sometimes, depending on those note combinations, it also feels like you're bumping into some very sharp corners.

I really enjoy his work and hope he visits Chicago sometime. Anyone have any experience with the HYLNDS line? Luckyscent seems to still have a few available on their site.

Yea, HYLNDS is great, esp if you take style inspiration from that region in general (so, like, tweeds and spongey sweaters, etc). I have a bottle of Pale Grey Mountain, Small Black Lake. A bit of a mouthful, but nice to smell.

Been away for a while........

Just ran out of Polo Double Black and my every-day Davidoff Cool Water.

Please suggest inexpensive replacements similar to those.

Thanks and cheers......

Funny I stopped at a great boutique today because I was in the neighborhood and they had testers of these out which I don’t ever remember them having. They remodeled over the summer and maybe they found old stock. PGM,SML is great and theyre going to try and track down a bottle for me. I’m considering a bottle of Bitter Rose,Broken Spear as well.

Sampled the Xinu and Jovoy lines. All four Xinu fragrances were beautiful though it would be difficult to spend that kinda money on a copal based fragrance, even if I really like the note. Incident Diplomatique is a likely purchase in the future.

Received a rare compliment on my scent today, from a building front desk receptionist who smelled me from several feet away ten hours after application. The fragrance? TFPB Italian Cypress (the only scent other than Aventus to get compliments).

It's a warm Indian Summer day here in San Francisco, so I'm wearing one spritz of Sonoma Scent Studio Incense Pure since it can warm up and radiate. Lovely resinous stuff and not at all smoky.

Love that stuff! I tried all of Laurie's stuff, many very well done, but IP is the standout. I think its extrait strength, a little bit goes a long way, and a 30mL bottle is very fairly priced as I recall.

Today I'm wearing Histoires de Parfums 1725, a very powdery fougere with anise/licorice component that I tend to enjoy. Perfect for that Autumn feeling.

Serge Luten's Ambre Sultan: An amber-y take on the old Arab spice market theme. This is mostly about coriander, bay leaf, and oregano, which gives it that Middle Eastern spice market feel, but in the back, there are all those ambery note -- creamy sandalwoods, sweet vanillas, resin, etc. The opening is a bit powerful, but it dries down nicely. Smells a little like Dior Mitzah.
