Its Sandalwood Thursday, so...Tam Dao

I tried to wear TF Santal Blush today, but I discovered that I had run out. Depending on how strictly we define "sandalwood scent," I think Santal Blush is my favorite sandalwood scent.

Instead, I'm wearing Sahara Noir. It's a fantastic dirty frankincense and labdanum scent, and it's a shame it's been discontinued.

Sahara Noir has a great rose component as well, but labdanum steals the show on this one.

Tam Dao EdT is my first niche love - I have four bottle which date to around 2005-06 so I will always have it.

Late to the party, but I've been sampling some House of Matriarch fragrances. Bought one of their sampler packs and will be going through it. Two I've tried so far:

House of Matriarch's Epiphany: Fragrantica has a weird note breakdown on this -- lavender, oakmoss, tobacco, oud, peppers, honey, and amber. Some describe it as being a smoky lavender, but I don't get much smoke from this. It's more of a bone dry, almost dusty lavender. Like lavender mixed in with a pile of toothpicks. In the drydown, you get a bit more of the spices and out coming out. Overall a really nice masculine lavender.

House of Matriarch's Destrier: Epiphany had a brighter, more interesting opening to me, but Destrier stays consistently good -- and lasts a bit longer. This is a nice, polished leather, almost picture perfect in representation. This is almost like the inside of a brand new leather bag or pair of shoes. I also get a bit of hay note in here. One of the best leathers I've smelled. This is a modern leather without the green notes and heaviness that make some other leathers smell dated.

I'll go through some of the other samples in the next week, but just from these two, HoM seems a bit hard to describe. None of the reviews I've seen or read really do these two fragrances above justice (and neither do my descriptions). I'm not as over the moon about the company as some people, but the scents are certainly sophisticated, interesting, and unique, but also wearable at the same time. Which seems like a hard thing to achieve for many fragrance houses -- you see the same accords over and over again, citrus with aquatic, rose and oud, another barbershop-y fougere. HoM's presentation is also pretty impressive (why is Creed's so damn badddd!!??). But as others have noted, the scents are fleeting and painfully expensive.

I'm tempted to get a bottle of Destrier though.

@dieworkwear I think you will really like Co Co Blanc (if you haven't tried it already). One of those "If only it lasted it would be FBW" fragrances for sure.

Yea, I remember sampling Dusita's Issara and thinking it was amazing, but incredibly expensive and fleeting. So I went through my teeny 0.7ml sample and moved on. Then a year later, bought a bottle cause it was just too good.

Maybe that'll happen with HoM.

My fragrance of the day is definitely Eau de Toilette 'Potion' by Pull&Bear. I bought it recently as a purchase on the side for super priceworthy 15€ and I have been absolutely loving it. I will go back to the store in Cologne to buy another bottle before it is sold out.

It has fresh citric note but also very a rustic and masculine quality to it. The girls love it, too.

Lemon, Bergamot, Mandarin, Orange
Lavender, Tarragon, Cardamon, S. Gerandium
Cedarwood, Tabac, Musk, Sandalwood

My scent for this spring.

It was in the mid 70s here in San Fran, so I pulled out my bottle of Santa Maria Novella Eva, a clean and simple vetiver with a creamy jasmine component.

I used to really like Double Black. I haven't smelled it in a decade though, so I don't know if I still do. I think Bleu de Chanel is another option besides the Armani Code recommendation.

L', and Broken,

Thanks.........I have been out of Bleu for a while and liked it. I will pick up Bleu and also test Armani Code.

Ciao

Trying Coco Blance today and it's Ric Flair level WOOOOOOOOOOO.

A bit more delicious and masculine than Chanel Coromandel, a bit richer and fuller than Dior's Feve. I don't care if it doesn't last forever, I may have to get a bottle.

ha! Figured you might like that one. I had a decant of that which I polished off quickly. Good stuff.

Last night I wore Tom Ford Noir de Noir, a modern rose chypre. I have tried many rose chypres. Tauer makes 3 or 4 of them. Despite my fondness for the note, most rose fragrances don't click for me. NdN is an exception. The deep, wine-y and tangy rose note avoids the syrupy sweetness that spoil many rose chypres for me. Moss is evident from the outset and becomes more obvious as the scent develops. The base is delicious without being over the top. It features a "truffle" note described by many as 'chocolate.'

NDN carries a good 12-14 hours, and the dry down is thoroughly enjoyable. I am nearly through a 30mL decant. Time to track down a bottle.

Day off today. Wearing an old favorite, Chanel PM vintage. Have a great holiday all.

Today I'm wearing the brand new Kerosene Walk the Sea. I haven't been a fan of many of the Kerosenes I've tried, and this one is no exception. It's what you'd expect from the name: salty and mineraly. There's also a really loud ambergris-like note. In fairness to Kerosene, I don't think I like a single scent in this genre, so I don't want to say it's a bad perfume. I'm not the best person to judge.

Cuirs by Carner Bercelona. It's a smooth, easy-to-wear leather that is pleasantly sweetened with tonka (I think). It sits pretty close to the skin.

Today I wore Bel Ami Vetiver, which I’ve said before is just as enjoyable as the vintage Bel Ami.
