Saphir cream leather shoe polish leaving a sticky residue on boots?

Hi, I'm currently having an issue with this cream I used on my black cowboy boots from Lucchese. I noticed a light scuff and went to use this black cream leather shoe polish from Saphir(Saphir Medaille d’Or Pommadier Natural Cream Leather Shoe Polish to be specific). It worked, but now has left this sticky residue on the area I applied it. I got some of it off, but there's still a good bit there. Anyone ever have this experience before with this polish from Saphir?(or any polish really)? I wonder if maybe I didn't buff the area enough or something, I'm not sure. How do I get this residue off? I thought of giving my boots a cleaning to try and fix this, I just worried that any solvent cleaner stuff could strip too much and cause more issues instead of fixing the problem. Anyone ever been in this situation before and know how to resolve this? I really don't want to ruin my boots trying to get this gunk off of them.

I've not heard of that before. Perhaps you used too much and it wasn't able to absorb? Had you cleaned/polished the boots before or were they still as-is from the factory? You said you buffed it after it dried - did you use a horsehair brush or soft rag?

What kind of leather are the boots?

You could try applying a very small amount of neutral leather conditioner, like Bick 4, and rubbing that in. Then buff that after it dries. Otherwise, you could wipe the boots with a damp rag and see how it feels after that. If you're still having problems, you could use saddle soap to clean the boots, then use a conditioner, then a small amount of polish. I wouldn't recommend a chemical cleaner yet at this point.

Chances are you've applied too much and it has caked on the surface. Just buff off with a clean cloth, several times. Might take a while depending on how much the excess is.
