First in the "slowly but surely" parade is the peacoat in Herdwick tweed in the lighter sheep variant ...

Hey Paul, quick question for you. Would you recommend a medium balmacaan to someone that wears a 40/50 jacket if they plan to wear tailoring or a sports coat under it?

Exactly, yes — size M would be the best place to start for a 40 chest.

It is cut as a pure overcoat, to fit over a sensible number of layers.

The only consideration is if you prefer an especially loose or relaxed fit to your overcoats, in which case size L would be okay, too.

(It also depends a little on the structure of the tailoring and the fabric of the tailoring — i.e. there's a big difference between an unstructured worsted and a heavily structured tweed.)

Thanks for the quick reply! I ask because I'm both muscular and short and as such it's difficult to find the right fit without trying things on. How many CM are easy to trim off the sleeves? I'd likely need to get them shortened.

The sleeves can be shortened to any length, from the cuff.

When a tailor is opening the sleeve to cut it, they can easily move the tab at the same time, too, to a relocated standard position.

Sounds like no topcoat this year? What are the chances I can stuff my barrel chest into a L if I’m a 44/54? 0%?

Not advisable, no!

The topcoat is entirely true to size, and size L is cut for a 42 chest. It would be a squeeze and no mistake.

And no topcoats to be made this year, alas. Maybe a return next year!

Hi, love the lighter Herdwick tweed, but the Peacoat is rather short for my taste. Anyone here who would sell me their Ulster in M or possibly S if cut roomy?

A bit like with the greatcoat enquiry a few days back, the Ulster in Herdwick was made in such absurdly slight numbers that — well ... even though you're asking in the right place for sure — I expect they're very hard to find in the wild.
